I think they can be unreliable, especially after a time, and then you cant get them off the tank easily to replace them, so I dont use them.

I think they are rubbish. Not very clear and you have to take into account that they are not actually measuring the water temp but the glass temp which in my opinion is inaccurate. I use electronic or old fashioned glass ones.

When I've inherited/bought second hand tanks they have had these on but I add my own sit in the water kind of thermometer and there can be a couple of degrees difference so I wouldn't trust them :dk:

All my tanks have the stick on temp strips for a quick look and see guide. My plec tanks have a digital temp meters on them as well, and both seem to read the same.

I suppose their ok for the price, 99p on ebay, but if keeping expensive fish, theres no point skimping on equipment, so go digital.

I use the glass ones on all my tanks. I also have 5 digital ones with the probe that goes in the tank, They were all bought new but 2 different makes and all say accurate to within +/- 1C. I put all 5 probes together in open air and also in a tank and they all had different readings the extreme 2 read 21C and 30C!
So I don't bother using them and stick to the galss ones.

I have had Digital gauges with a probe in the past from £15 to £30 and they were not acurate at all i used them for a few months then bought a tds pen with temp i checkd my water and the digital gauges were 3C under the true temp, bought glass ones since and they tally up with the tds pen, old school glass is the best and most acurate in my opinion

Hi all,
I like old fashioned glass thermometers, they don't have any moving parts to go wrong and they tend to be fairly accurate, even the cheap ones.

I have spent a small fortune on thermometers. Especially the digital internal ones without probes. Almost all have crapped out on me. I have a couple of stick on ones that are more accurate to a whole degree than others. I now use an infrared thermometer to accurately test the temp - the others I use for a rough guide.

i have 60 odd tanks with stick on thermometers.... i also have half a dozen glass ones i rotate around the tanks to check periodically and they all pretty much read a degree high in summer and a degree low in winter.... when a stick on thermometer packs it in real easy to change it....
and when you have racks of tanks most of them read the same temp horizontally... only differs from bottom tank to middle then to the top...
used to use internal digital ones but they were not cost effective in the long run....
