Just curious to see what types of filtration others use on their plecs tanks. Also how/why is this setup used, how did you come about deciding on what to use?

2 of my tanks are juwels and still use the internals that came with them, although i have upgraded the pumps to 1500ltr/hr, also have an extra internal on both of them, just as additional filtration/ water movement.
on my 2m tank, i have an FX5 that came with it, and an extra tetra tec ex1200 for extra filtration, wanted to get as much flow and filtration as i could without going totally silly

Rio 300: standard internal with 1500lph powerhead and tetratec ex1200. the external mainly because i have messy feeders.

Rio 180: standard internal with 1000lph powerhead and hydor circulator thingy (cant remember what you call them lol) for added flow for the hypans. Want to add a tetratec ex700 to this one as it gets a bit messy.

2 ft tank: air filter (over sized) and fluval 2+

currnetly running:

4 x 110L tanks all with eheim 2224 (i think) externals, all breeding tanks 2 with aditional internal eheim aqua balls & 500l/hr powerheads

2 x 60L breeding tanks with eheim 2213 externals

1 x 100L cory tank with bubble filteration

eheims are used due to low power consumption, reliability & because they are great filters

On my Rena 525 litre tank I run:

Pressurised filter runnning at est 3300lph with solids pump, Tetratec ex 2400lph (soon to go) and Eheim 2180 1700lph.

Juwel 180 litre (did run):

Internal 1000lph, Tetratec ex 1200lph, Rena xp3 1000lph

Juwel 70 litre (did run):

Fluval 304 1000lph, Tetratec ex 1200lph

But I do have a strange fondness for big filters!

I'm ******* poor so I have to make do with random crap. I collect random HOBs from garage sales and bargain bins and refurbish them for smaller tanks.

For the larger ones, I make DIY drip filters. Currently, I have five gallon bucket filters, but previously, I used a more complex system from one of these:

http://lisa.wumple.com/creations/studio/rubbermaid2.jpg

you drill holes on the bottom of each layer, fill it with a different media, connect a powerhead out of the aquarium to the top layer, and add a strong pond fountain pump on the bottom layer back into the tank. A younger family member trashed it, and I don't have another rubbermaid storage shelf to retool, so screw it.

I also attach sponges to the intakes of powerheads and HOBs for essentially double the filtration surface area.

Both my tanks are Rio 400's gradually ended up with bigger and bigger tanks

Rio 400L #1
Juwel internal filter with sponges
Tetratec ex1200 flled with sintered glass rings
Fluval 4 plus internal just for mechanical dirt removal
Lots of java fern
sand on bottom
1 4 inch Panaque
1 Sultan fully grown
1 L147 fully grown
1 vampire plec

Rio 400L #2
Juwel internal filter with sponges
2 eheim ecco externals filled with sintered glass rings
1 small hydor external filled with sintered glass rings
I had 2 spare ecco's and the hydor when I upgraded both our main tanks made sense to use them rather than buy another larger external allows me to stagger filter cleaning
2 Fluval 4 plus internals just for mechanical dirt removal
Lots of java fern
gravel on bottom
1 Gibby
1 Watermelon Panaque
1 L190

All my tanks have external canister filters (mainly for biological filtration), internal Fluval plus (various sizes mainly for mechanical filtration) and sponge filters (for backup and biological filtration). I have found this set up to work very well for all my tanks.

Eheim external cannister filters because of their reputation, which i now back, plus internal Fluval filters for extra circulation and back up.

I did try sump filtration at first on some growout tanks because i read that it was the best filtration you can have, but i designed it myself and when running just one stack of three tanks and a sump, it was too noisey, so scrapped the sumps and went with cannister filters instead.

Also, all tanks have one or two airstones running on them.

I cant give you an exact figure of what filters im running/not running as im due to move and everything is about to change. Im probably going to have a centralised system of sorts for most of my tanks and an extra back up filter in each plec tank. and then some sort of water changer. cant be certain to how its all going to work as now Im possibly not having a shed/fish house and might be having one large fish room. so not sure.

I have a 200 litre corner unit with a fluval 404, fluidised bed filter, UV sterilizer, and it had a built in top filter that i bored some holes through the top of the tank hood and turned it into a plant filter.
I just like heavy filtration.

I over filter. I have multiple tanks and on most I run two cannisters.
My most extreme setup is two 1000 l/h cannisters on a standard 3 ft tank with two large sponge filters and the occasional internal filter. I have had over 60 fish in this tank at times with no problems.
