Could i use an old mug or cup for a cave for breeding?

I use an earthenware teapot for breeding smaller cichlids, so I don't see why not. If its safe to eat or drink off it should be ok for fish.

For breeding what?
Suitability for specific fish can depend on each fish. For instance, for plecs, the diameter to depth ratio might not be right. But in general, if the question is if its safe, then the answer would be its okay.
