Woop! A pair of my jewels are currently laying eggs & fertilizing :)

I really was hoping to move the pair to their own 3ft tank tonight before she laid but they've beaten me to it, So what now?

There are 8 other cichlids in the tank & i dont want them getting to the fry, So what's best i do here? Move the 8 cichlids to the 3ft tank or am i safe to move the breeding pair & the slate the eggs are on to the 3ft tank.

I've had previous cichlids have 3 lots of fry before finally getting success & that was only because the male had killed all the other cichlids & i really don't want him to kill the other 8.

I can't seperate the tank either. Any help appreciated .

I would move the slate into the empty tank & would run an airstone beside it & try to hatch them out myself congrats on the spawn anyhow

Do i not need to keep a parent with them, or is that only to help fend of any would be predators?
Looks like she has finished now , I need to do water changes on my tanks so ill just use that water for the 3ft .

Fingers crossed !

Hi,

I would suggest two options.

1. Use the water from your present tank to fill up the 3ft. Place the slate under water in a bowl and then transfer to the 3ft, so no air gets to them and place an airstone next to it. See how that goes. If mold and eggs turn white, then sad to say no luck. however

2. If the above occurs then just trnasfer the pair to the 3fter and voila you are set ready to go again.

Jewels make exceptional parents. cheers jk

Congrats on your spawn,
I would remove the slate/eggs & the parents or the eggs will be yummy midnight snacks, also a parent pair can cause injuries to the other tank mates..So it would be in the eggs and tank mates best interests to be removed...
Don't forget the air stone..

Same as the others really, I don't think you can leave them in there with the eggs because as big-bird says Hemichromis species are "exceptional parents" and capable of damaging fish many times there own size.
