Brand is the big consideration. Hanna is one I like. Like most electronics, cheap ones only mean you'll be getting another later. Somethinh that allows you to calibrate is also a plus.

Oooh make sure the tester is actually for TDS. Lost count of the idiot advertisers who mistakenly call pH as TDS.

I did buy one from a lfs for tds and when I got it home its for the conductivity seimens electro whatever it is. There is no way I am going to sit there with a calculator to convert back to TDS on 29 tanks lol.

I bought a HM one. Fantastic tds pen! Wouldn't be without it. Here's a website on them. http://www.tdsmeter.com/

I have a HM TDS tester that I bought of ebay and I find it very good it can be calibrated and also displays the water temp.

You need to calibrate and to get on that can be caibrated. If not its really pointless to get one as without being able to calibrate the unit you'll never be sure exactly what the number you get means. Its like getting a thermometer without markings. You'll be able to tell that at some points the mercury is higher relative to other other times, but just not what temperature it is.

I think they went HM, Hanna is also a good company.
