I have a outbreak of white spot, Ich in my community tank !! :~(

Taken 2 blue rams and 2 electric blue rams out and in Quarantine tank as they have a few spots.

The rest of the tank look OK, but i have treated with half dose of Tetra Contra Spot as i have 2 x L204 and 1 x L191 and 6 x Cory's that i am worried about. I also turned up temp on tank. Took Carb out of filters.

Planning strip decorations and plants out 2 moz and clean the gravel throughly. Plus do a big water change.

Ran round all other tanks but they are all OK. :fr::fr:

What would be best treatment with the pleco's and Cory's in tank ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its only the rams that have it?

Not too sure about nowadays but they used to be notorious for getting white spot if the water wasnt to their liking. I would hold out on treating the whole community for now, just keep an extra eye on it, the other fish shouldnt be as stressed as the rams ( i take it they are the new guys from wharf?) and their immune systems could well deal with it. First signs of white spot on any of the others then treat. I use WS3.

I have used WS3 in the past myself its the one ive found to work the best by far, its a small tub by King British you only need a ml or so its quite a strong medication, if you dont already turn your temp up to around 80F+

Its only the Rams that have the signs, no flashing from the others in the tank.
Its a big tank has Angles x 2, Sword Tails x 4, 2 x Yellow labs and a few others.

I kept rams once and that was for about 2 weeks when they died of a massive white spot infestation and never touched them since.

If im not mistaken they prefer higher temps and soft water.

Dont panic and start taking everything out of the tank and stirring up the gravel and what not. You'll only stress the fish.

Just do normal water change then 2 moz and keep eye on rest of tank. Just a panic i think as wife away and its her tank !! She has named all the fish !!! Last time 2 years ago when i was away she lost alot of fish to white spot, tetras, synodontis hybrid, large golden nugget and i think some rams that time as well.

Will get some WS3 on way home pass a few fish shops on way home so one should have it.

If it was mine i would take it in my stride but they are not mine.

If you can't get that med esha exit is good also.

Increase aeration in the tank.

Hi,

Sorry to hear of the problems you are having.

I wouldn't treat right away just increase the temp and add salt (effects the ich parasites' cell membrane, so really effective!) around 0.25g per L and do 25%-50% water changes daily. Salt is not dissolved in the water or removed by activated carbon, so when you do a 50% water change you will need to replace the salt that has been removed (3g in, followed by a 50% water change so 1.5g must go back in with the new water) Treat like this for 3 days if still infected treat till you dont see any spots then treat for one further day.
If you are increase the temp you must increase the aeration as at hotter temps there is less o2 in the water. Esha exit is fantastic for Ich.

If you are treating with salt (which I would recommend, especially from a veterinary point of few to reduce the risk of resistance) make sure the salt dose is correct, so work out the water volume to the water line and dose accordingly. I say this because salt has negative osmotic effect on fish at too higher dose. Please dont let this put you off though as long as you do 0.25g per litre you will be fine.

Hope that all makes sense and helps

Kev

****Update****

Well the Rams are looking alot better, no deaths of any fish.

So good so far.

Fed the comunity tank as i walked in as normal, Angle's waiting as norm and L190 waiting for his veg. The SYNODONTIS Hybrib 6" had him when he was just little came out for his feed started flasing and had a ood look and Yes he has a few spots on him. !!!! So now he with the Rams. Checked the rest the Labs, Angle's corys etc etc seem ok. And my wife back on monday think i will have to tell her befor she gets back.

Thats is great news,
Keep your temp up above 28 for 2 weeks or more. the cycle lasts this long, adding salt, & the appropriate medication & extra air also for the fish...& vac cycts off the floor...while doing a small wc daily..
I hope you never have to suffer it again...
I keep rams & I used to suffer this awful parasite quite often, ..

Get a UV sterilizer & you will never have to think about it again,
