hi guys, aprox 2 weeks ago I picked up a great pc of wood-Mylasian? Not Mopani, this wood is on the soft side ,can scrape with fingernail. So I have been boiling daily to get most of the tannins out , just want to leave a little. The water has been tea-color as usual, but yesterday and today I noticed some bubbles in the water. I have checked with everone in the house to make sure nobody touched it (it iis half sticking out of the water ,and I need to keep turning it) ,noone had touched it ,I made sure no hand cream ,no soap residue when i turn it..so wonder where the bubbles are coming from all the sudden. Any ideas ? I dont feel it will be safe to use when the tank is ready for it ,unless others have seen this also. I have always boiled my wood ,different kinds and never saw this before and it didnt happen the first 2 weeks of boiling , just started yesterday and today. Ideas what is up ? thanks

maybe it was not dryed out completetly and the air are gasses from decaying matter inside the wood ? cheers jk

maybe just formed on rough surface out of the water because the air pressure is changing? i doubt if its anything to worry about. even if its a bit of wood decay it wont hurt the fish as its a natural thing. if the wood smells bad then its too rotten.

Normal IMO

Sometimes it will look like a dehydrated person took a whizz in the bucket.

I know this might sound odd but I taste things like that just to make sure it's not soap.

i worry about you Jackson  agree though taste it. It might also just be water getting into the remaining parts of the wood and thus pushing out the air bubbles. By the way I do like the piece of wood that you have. cheers jk

lol- the minds of some people! :) looks normal aswell....figured it may have been air but the worry imo was well worth it now you have a mega piece of wood like that!!! did you get it out the shops? how did you boil it when it is that big? out of interest how much did you pay for that, wondering if it is as expensive in us as it is here!

hi cc, thanks , and yes i bought it at an all fish store , cost about $25. Still boiling , will post a pic after i upload it onto photobucket, yeah it is big ,but not too big for the tank..just right , the pot i am using used to be for lobsters but i hated that ,dunking live lobsters into boiling water, no way, so i took over the pot for wood and stones :woohoo: the wood sticks out as you will see , the pot is big, but not big enough, so i have to keep turning the wood. I plan to leave a little bit of tannins in there for my ph , but this wood got a lot of tannins ,let me tell ya. thanks for the post.
