I decided to re-arrange my zeb tank a little to get more flow around the back as I was getting food settling so took all the caves and wood out this morning. The Zebs were flying all over the place very unimpressed with it all :frantic: Took a few pics but decided against taking them all out individually to photograph them but I did have a good look and believe I have at least one more female out of the group I grew on to the 2 I added recently. So at the minute its 50-50 split with the other 2 being a bit small to tell.

I spaced out the caves and slate and wood more so its a little more open but they all have a hidey hole now instead of being bunched up together under the slate sandwich :lol

Anyway here are a few pics

Looking good Jo, and good news on the sex ratio, would be great if the other 2 end up being a pair too.
look forward to the flip flap of tiny fins

I never had heater guards, never had a problem, am I riding for a fall? :dk:
yep:cry:
def get a heater guard, it may be that you never need it, but better spend £3 on one than lose £???'s on dead and burnt zebs

Hi

Don't know if its me but I had heater guards in zeb tanks and the adults never went near them also I had to remove my guards as the fry were hiding in them and posed more of a threat. IMO seeing that zebs are not grazers for algae and such, like other types of plecs are, they are not so much a threat to being burnt by the heaters.

Hope this helps

In the house of gee
I had a zeb that like to hide behind my heater and found it one day sat at the front of the tank with a nice burn mark all down one side. It recovered and still hid by the heater even after putting the guard on. I have guards in all my fry tanks and never had a problem that I am aware of.

For the sake of 3 quid over a 100 pound fish then I really dont think there is a contest.

Just me being paranoid maybe:)

Cheers

Hi thegeeman
I see your point of view about the guards but with zebs and only them what can cause the problem of fish being burnt is due to the positioning of the heater in the tank ie to near to the bottom or to near or hiding behind some decor .If the heater is half way up the tank and in mid water with nothing by it the zebs should not need to hide near it,so this can mean not enough hiding places or over crowding in the tank.
They will pick a nice small dark place to hide every time over a heater in the open.
If they have the right set up they will most likely never go near a heater IMO.
Not saying you are doing it wrong but could be a contributory factor.
None of my zebs can get behind the heaters ether so no hiding place.

Jerry my heaters keep falling off the tank wall and ending up on the floor which is probably why I should get a guard, or better suckers :wb:

Hi

Yes the suckers don't last long I am always buying spares all the time and go though them quite quickly.
Just keep an eye on the heater guards when you get small fry in the tank.
I hope you get them to spawn soon good luck.
