Hello everybody. I am in the process of setting up a tank for my L134 juveniles - due to be delivered in a couple of weeks. Can I use any wood (from a creek) or does it have to be driftwood from the lfs? I want them to be as happy as possible in their new home. Also what cleanup tank mate can i put in there with them in case they are not interested in algae etc.

Thanks,

Labroy

Hello,

Good to see that you are getting L134, they are very nice Ls.
Make sure that you have cycled your tank for a while, for at least 4-6 weeks before introducing them. You did state you are in the process of setting up and you get them in 2 weeks.
Timber from LFS most of the time is clean and clear of all foreign issues and is to 99.9 % safe. You can also use timber from creeks etc, just make sure you know what wood you have as some woods are toxic. Also wood from creek can introduce foreign aliens so to speak. If you are considering wood from the local creek, then soak it in your own water for 2-4weeks, then boil it if you can. Remember for the L134 set ups, that you need a lot of caves approx 1 per fish, but I add more. The L134 is not a known algae eater so to speak. I just control my feeding and make sure I do regular water changes . I have no other fish in my L134 set up. hope this helps cheers jk

I read in an article HERE that it can be illegal in Australia to remove wood in any form from its natural habitat. :dk:

Yeah, my Dad mentioned it to me (he used to work in the forest industry), but you can't help it when it came from the creek, dislodged with all the flooding rain we've had, and then somehow managed to be in the way of where I was planning on driving :D. It had to be moved out of the way.

Hi bigbird. I do have an established tank, but I did not want to put them in there, as they are juveniles. My established tank has Kuhlii loaches (about 6), Yoyos (2), Clown loaches (3), Bristlenose( 5), Chinese Algae Eater (1), Ottocinclus (3)and a Gold Spot Pleco in it. The supplier told me that they may be ready in about 4 weeks to be shipped to me. (The ottos were only added recently sort out the Brown Algae - under control now. So as you can see, this is why I am going for a species only tank, or thereabouts.

Hey guys, just a quick update.

While we were on holidays last week lapping it up in Newcastle, I had family looking after the feeding of my fish. My mother contacted me on Friday night to tell me that there was bad news with my fish tanks. Because my house had been locked up (no open windows during the day), and we had had hot weather in Townsville, my 2 ft tanks managed to boil most of the inhabitants of each tank.

In one tank, I lost all my Kuhlis - about 6, 10 rummynose tetras, 6 or so neon tetras, 2 yoyo loaches - about 5 inches in length, 3 swordtails. The only ones that survived the high temps in that tank were my L001 - about 20cms, and a bristlenose, and a 12cm peppermint.

(Now my heart breaks)
In my other tank, I lost my 3 L134's - my pride and joy!! approx 7 cm (had them from fry), about a dozen celestial pearl danios, and possibly some bristlenose fry. I know that at least one of my clown loaches have survived as i saw him swimming around this morning. - And of course, my guppies survived also!

So, I don't think that I will need to continue this thread of what to feed my L134's until I can afford to buy some more - hopefully later in the year!
