I just want to know what peoples thoughts are on grow out tanks. I have an Aquaone AR850 which i use as a grow out tank however it has pretty much been unused for about 2 months other then some endlers and siamese algae eaters in it due to not having any fry. So given the filters on it the heaters and maintainence it is kinda pointless running it at the time being other then the fact it is a fully cycled tank.

This brings me to my question. I was wondering how many people actually utilise a tank simply for fry growth after they reach about 4-6 weeks in their bred tank. As i have my 4 ft tank which is currently running 2 canister filters, Aquis 1200 and 1000, 2 large sponge filters. I fully understand the importance of good water to encourage fry growth and am pretty pedantic at times with my 4ft tank in terms of gravel vaccing out the waste every day and 1-2 water changes a week depending on the amount i remove.

My current tank mates stand at

4 adult peppermints
1 albino short fin fry
11 endler guppies.

So pretty much i am considering shutting down the grow out tank and moving the 3-4 peppermint fry, 1 albino fry and 10 endler females into my 4ft.
I know i would be increasing the bioload in the tank hence why i would like oppinions first as i would also have to include any future peppermint fry i hope to breed.

Come tax time i am also looking atinvesting in a top notch eheim filter aswell.

I have a 4x18x18 with a eheim 2217, At the moment it has 2x l127's, 6 aldofi corys, 4 pairs of black moscow guppies plus hundreds of fry, shrimp, snails and l007's shortly. The l127's will be coming out as they get bigger, ALso have a 3 x18x18 with 6 x l397's and two pair of breeding butterfly rams and 3 emerald green brochis. Filters have been running for over 1.5yr now so just let them be and everything is fine lol Even my parimiters lol

Your Endlers, Peps etc will be fine in your 4'.
Try the Reef Shop or Age of Aquariums for your Eheim when you come to buying it. Will be money well spent ;)

My question though is whether or not it would still be better to have such a large tank for just fry or just let them remain in the 4 ft. Guessing you guys dont use a grow out tank either?

In regards to buying the eheim i am lucky in sense my LFS will price match and then do price better plus i can take something home and pay it off lol :)

I use 2x1x1 tanks with sponge air filters in them for grow out until fish hit the 3-4 cm mark then I chuck them in a 4x2x1 until they're abit bigger when they goto the lfs to be sold so I don't really need to worry about too much space.
