What is the optimum cave size for breeding Ancistrus? asking as I have found a supply of some rather nice cave like structures that have slightly variable holes.

Old (probably Victorian) drainage pipes made from heavy terracotta, about 12" long with hole about 2" to 3", I know for some bigger ones with holes about 5" as well, thought I might clean them up, attach some Moss and sell them on ebay.

Modern terracotta may leach from the glaze but seldom from the clay itself, these are probably 100 years old so little chance of contamination.

I don't know where the clay will have been harvested but most clays carry a metal content, clay has shown signs when applied to absorption of metals in water and air purification.
Usually terracotta carries iron, hence the colour, this being old and being in the ground for years will be free of nasties.
