Most of mine are square slate caves. If you put caves in of various shapes and size's the male will pick what suits him best which by the sounds of it is the bn cave

Yup mine have the choice of the slate cave or the round log ones. The males will stay in the round log ones and the females go in the slate ones.
Yup, very tight fit and their side pec fins have developed callus on them but they will not give up their round caves.

I have two pairs of 397's, they both spawned about 6 weeks ago, and one pair has just spawned again today. The other pair is looking keen. Both pairs are in a 4ft tank with around 30 longfin albinos growing out (average size 5-6cm) and a handful of tetras.

Bigjohnnofish, how are you caring for the fry? What do you feed? Are they in a fry saver or left in tank?

I have not had a single loss yet. I count them every few days and they are still all there as of this morning, 5 weeks later. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

to be honest i've been trying to nut out the reason behind this.... and it keeps coming back to the unknown chemicals that are present in the tap water... we get our water off mundaring weir which is the only catchment in australia that uses chloramine in the water... we double dose with prime to cater for this... but there are all sorts of flocculents present... they add over 113 different chemicals to our tap water...
it doesnt effect any of the others breeding 333,066,260,201 etc only the 397's so it maybe something that affects only the panaques...

if i leave them in the cave they come out bloated and die... if i raid the eggs round day3 and tumble them i usually avoid the bloat problem...
put back into the tank, they die within a week or so as they cant find the food often enough to feed on...
in a fry saver i have tried all sorts of food from cuccumber, zicchinni, pumpkin, sweet potatoe, brocolli stalk, sera flora flake, viformo tabs, spirulina powder, hikari algae wafers, mini wafers, fine wood shavings you name it i've tried it a few times....
from a spawn of 20 i might end up with 5... or lose the lot...

friends on a different water supply tell me they have no problem at all either
so its a bit of a pisser!!!!.... but then i've spawned heaps of stuff they cannot!

When i lived out in a country town we had same problem of over doseing by water board, i wouldn't discount a chemical that only effects the panaques do you have any other types ie 002s? to see if it happens to them also or friends nearby?

Do you get the desal water thru to your place as on other forums it can swing the ph violently!

Not looking forward to ours as we have the best water in the world its clean and quite clean of crap best and low ph. ( have been told it will bump up ph to approx 7.6 )
