Hi All

Some thoughts please.

My gold nugget has appeared today with a "white patch" down one flank.

Its not fluffy or raised, just looks like the colour has gone. Its not a heater burn as thats enclosed in the jewel filter.

Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 5-10 temp 26c.

Am treating tank with Melafix at the moment due to fighting angels.

Nugget is still active and feeding happily on some courgette as I type.

An ideas what it could be, maybe hes been fighting with the BN?????

Sorry no pics as camera out of action

thanks
Steve

hard to say really steve, could be a scuff from fighting, could just be one of those things.
i've had plecs lose virtually all of their colour before, just for it to colour back up with no action from me

have you ever seen any aggression between him and your other plecs?
with there being no chance of it being a heater burn, i cant think of anything other than a bit of fighting that might have caused it. doesn't look overly bad though and should clear up with lots of water changes

hi thanks for replies, L015, clown plec and male bn. Lots of hiding places and all been together since april. Bn chases the others off if the try to encroach on his veg but i always stick at least two pieces in at a time so he can have one to himself. Other three will happily share. Will keep an eye on them and do a couple of waterchanges over next few days.

male BN's can be really nasty, worth keeping an eye on anyway
******* gutted, got home about an hour ago and he was dead.

Was fine this morning, tonight a total mess, fins shredded and body scuffed all over.

Everything else fine and just completed water tests, ammonia and nitrite zero.

:cry::cry::cry::cry:

how are the others doing? :( so sad to hear your loss. and how is the other plec that got in the scrap?
BN is fine so are the others. He pretty much ignores the Clown (too small to bother with I guess) and the Candy stripe is about the same size as the BN but they have always been fine. Have had a major revamp in the tank this weekend, moved hardscape around and created new hiding places so hopefully things will settle down. Was watching last night and the BN and Candy Stripe were on the same piece of wood and they calmly passed each other so fingers crossed.

you didn't happen to take a photo of him after you found him did you? Were there any other marks when you found him after he passed away?

Could have scraped it on something and got a secondary bacterial infection, also could have got septicaemia which has not symptoms they are fine then just spin around for a few seconds then die.

really sorry to hear about your loss, plecs can be a real headache!

Hi and Thanks

No didnt take any photos when I found him.

Whole body looked like the patch in the photos, plus fins were shredded.

When I saw him in the morning he only had the patch on his side.

hey mate. yes they can be a real headache, and bns and gold nuggets can be very nasty. i find plecs like humans, some of one species are very placid and layed back, others of the same species are very aggressive!

That sounds like extra slime coat being produced due to stress. That stress could be from fights or an infection which could also explain the fins or even an irritant in the water.

If you see this on any other fish i would suggest doing a 50% water change and adding 0.25g per L. Or treating with melafix.

Hope I've helped a little, sorry again for your loss.
