hey guys i have had a colony of 397's 2m 6f for a few months now. all are around 3 years and 12cm. it might just be they havnt settled in yet but i was wondering what is the best setup i should have for breeding.

i originaly had them in my display 6x2x2.5 with other L's and fish but thought either the other fish or having to many distractions wouldnt result in them breeding. i moved 1m3f into a 2x18x18 with gravel, sponge filter, internal filter,2 bamboo caves and a clay breeding log,

should i split them and have the 2 colonies in 2 2x18x18's or move them all into something like a 4x18x18.

thanks,

also i feed them shrimp pellets and algae disks

Yeah, I think your right, Might let them settle in. I have read that it might take several months without any changes (except for normal water changes). Find a place that you like and leave them be. Just to your surprise.... they might spawn!! Good luck and keep us updated.:)

yes a small group in a their own tank is the way to go.
daily water changes for a few weeks then leave them alone for a few weeks and repeat . if nice low pressure storm comes up do a big 50% w/c, sometimes that helps.
maybe put another diff cave in so he has a choice. (is the bamboo a cave or open both ends?)
sometimes helps to have a few corys in the tank.

i have either (4m 6f) or (5m 5f) or (6m 4f) in a 2 foot tank (70ltrs) and they started spawning at 8-9cm and havent stopped since.....

my theory is give them too much room and they spread out.... smaller tank gives males and females less space and more bumping into each other !!!! = spawning.....

thanks guys, yer my theory was in a display tank there are way to many distractions, i thought maybe having that many adults in a tank would be not enough space for them but ill give it a go. i normaly do weekly water changes is this not enough? i change about 50%

i give them 30% wc every day or every second day....
just keep an eye on your nitratye levels to determine a good waterchanging routine... <10ppm is good...

You could try playing with the water temp. a little too. Raising the temp. in the tank a few degrees for a week or two and then doing a few cool water changes may trigger them. Good luck with them

No good they will never spawn for you, best thing is to box them up and send them over to me :lol::lol::lol:

Why can't we get 397's here??

Ignore em.
Lotsa driftwood turns em on. Kinky things.
Good current also.
Water change once or twice a week. Have fun vaccing all that chewed sawdust out.
Leave the temp alone.
No tank lights unless doing wc or filter cleaning, only room light. B-)
Did I mention ignore em? They breed very much like bristlenoses and when fry start getting kicked out the log, then its your turn to finish raising the fry.
You will have loads off oooh ahhh ogling once you have fry growing out in their own tank.

i change once a week but il just start doing more. do you's breed in gravel or no gravel? at the moment im breeding in gravel. also i normaly just leave the fry in the tank and catch them out once they are big enough about 2cm to move to completely new water, do yous all use fry savers? and at what size do yous put them into completely different water eg another tank setup

Sound advice from Brenda, born from much success...

If they take care of them, your set, if you see any outside embryo out of the cave while having it's eggs sac, You will have to grab it and put it in an egg tumbler(or it will be eaten buy something), or in a saver with an air stone in parent tank...

I use a frysaver until the fry are big enough at 2.5-3cm to move to their own tank.

It is much easier to siphon them up from the parent tank, when little, if they have been just kicked out of the log or pull the log out and empty the fry out when ready.

That way I am not ratting through the parent tank after very fast 4cm fry to sell and disturbing the breeding adults.
