Can I link 2 externals together?

I currently have an eheim 2224 (700l/hour) on a 125 l tank with a diffuser. The diffusre works (but not well) until I put a sponge on the inlet and clearly the flow is slightly reduced and that is enough to afferct the diffuser. I need a sponge on the intake as I have fry in the tank. I have just acquired an old ehein 2233 ecco and I was wondering if I could add it but use a simple Y connector so the outflow comes through the one diffuser - would this be ok??

You may have an issue with back pressure but it should be ok

You may have a problem with back preasure, but 2 one way check valves just before the Y should do that.

Thought about doing this my self, no reason just to see.

why not use fine netting over the intake rather than a sponge?

One must be dead ie no power
This will expand the filter area
Linking two that are powered will only destroy the bac in one by causing a poss dead area with no ox in it.

I have done it lots of timesthe one you run must be the first one on the line

That's the way I run them. However, I think the OP quesiton was about running to canisters in parralel to one outlet, not in series.

yes and my advice is dont do it your pressurising a filter it will have problems one filter must be dead

what would work is using over size pipe Just use a 16/22 conector and take the pipe up to 22 m/m on the pressure side
But you may get back pressure if one is more powerfull

i would get one bigger filter to run on that tank, then get 2 small tanks for the 2 small filters, job done. lol

Think there might be a misundertanding or i'm having a moment. What I was saying is that I run my filters as you described, in series, the first being "dead/unpowered", the second being powered. One suction line, one pressure line.

Think the OP is trying/asking about running two canisters in parralel, two suction lines and one outlet line. In which case both need to be powered to work.

If I run them in series then I wouldn't get the effect I want would I (increasing the flow at the outlet so the diffuser works)? If that wont work (and I understand why as one is more powerful that the other it could cause back pressure on the smaller one) would 1 way check vales solve that problem? Not sure where I would get those from though!!

Failing that anyone want to buy a 2233 so I can get another 2075????

Hi all,
Could you get a much coarser sponge for the intake? I don't buy mine, I just make them from some ppi10 sponge sheet. They should have very little effect on water flow, but keep the fry safe.

This is the one for a 2nd hand Eheim 2213. You can see the wavy seam where i sewed it up with nylon thread (I'm not very good at sewing). The sheets are cheap from "Kettering Koi" or similar.
