Hi All,

Although I do have a good current in my L333, L377 and L397 tanks, do you recomend also an airstone in each tank ?

Any ideas or help cheers jk

I have an airstone in all my tanks apart from nano. The bubbles you see in the water from an airstone do nothing until they reach the water surface, thats where the exchange takes place. You need to have good surface agitation with either airstones, powerheads or filter outlet and equally important good circulation to get the oxygen around the tank.

I rely on my sponge filters for air...they seem to do the trick, I don't seem to have an issue with air problems...I also have a HOB in every tank..
I don't think you can have too much air, but you can have too little...

I use ventiuri's or diffusers on all my filter outlets, does the same job but quieter and you don't have to plug in an extra piece of kit

Hi all,

very true. HOB filters (or any other trickle filters) are very efficient at gas exchange, so tend to lead to effective aeration.

As some people may know my "day job" used to include working with landfill leachate, and this gave me quite a good understanding of the relationship between BOD and aeration.

We also have an article that covers this area in some detail.
