has anyone actually seen this happen???

i lost a large male hypan the other day and i suspect something unusual killed it....as i watched it do some weird stuff before it just stopped and died on the spot... no visible damage on the fish at all... only male in the tank so it couldnt have been from fighting of any sort...

water parameters are as good as they can get... all the females and fry in the tank are perfect...

can anyone shine some light on this ??? :dk::dk::dk:

:imsorry: for your loss. People have speculated about heart-attack or stroke in fish , but I dont think anyone really knows for sure.:dk: I dont see why it isn't possible.

what did the fish actually behave like before it died? sorry about the plec mate
well he normally caves full time except to feed (during the daylight cycle)
but i spotted him darting from cave entrance to cave entrance and then doing a lap around the tank then he stopped at his favourite females cave and vibrated his odontodes and a little flare of the mouth then swam 20cm facing the back of the tank.... and died... after not moving for 10secs i reached into the tank to gently give him a nudge and he was cactus.... still warm when i placed him against my skin... definitely didnt die of old age he was just coming into his prime....

hmmm. Very unusual. If he was behaving really 'hyper and panicky' then it shows distress in fish. The flaring of the mouth, im not sure. Ive witnessed what i beleive was a stoke in one of my goldfish and my old common plec. They both darted around a bit, then kind of squirmed and faded away.. Fish only have 2 chambers in their heart, and stokes are much more likely to occur in creatures with more chambers in the heart. But it is possible. mammals and birds have 4, frogs 3, and fish 2. I beleive the 'vibrating' was trembling (i beleive). It might have been a seizure but i dont know.. How are the other fish in the tank behaving?
Im sorry about this mate :(

Sorry about your pleco :( sounds to me like septicemia to me. They usually dart around loads them just drop dead no other signs or symptoms unfortunately they can be fine right up until they start to dart around the tank. Septicemia is just blood poisoning which affects the fish neurologically hence the darting around. This is caused by a bacterial infection that leaks into the blood. I would do a water change on your tank just to be sure.

Hope that helps
