Not a happy day:wb::wb::wb: :cry:

My peps have their first spawn after moving and found out most of the fry were death in the side drop filter

has anyone use sidedrop for the BN???

Should i just change to sponge filter again???

My sidedrop has 3 layer

1. white wool
2. black sponge
3. Matrix in the bag

all the fry has their egg broken as they are trying to push their way from the white wool to the black sponge

Any idea?

Will post picture shortly

Thanks in advance

Sorry to hear of your losses, Sponge filters are the best for fry imo...I have hang on back filters as well as sponges in my tanks...I cover the intake with a small density sponge...bought on Ebay..sometimes marked for Chrystal Red Shrimp...

I am not sure what you mean by side drop filter.
what make is it?
I have several types of internal and external filters in my plec breeding tanks. I dont use sponge filter as clogs too quickly and filtration is important with lots of fish in tank.
I suspect you need to cover the filter intake with netting or similar?

yup also agree, cover the filter intake with a net or stocking etc and this should eliviate the problem of fry being sucked in..cheers jk

IMHO a side drop filter is not good for breeding plecos. Simply because fry can travel into it and may get stuck or cannot find a way back exactly as you described. Unless you can put a fine enough screen to prevent any fry going into it.
The same as weir. Recently my BN spawned, some fry went into the weir and died even there is a screen. Either they're small enough to go thru or climb.
As suggested, sponge filters are good.

reduce water level to just get a trickel in at a time ?

i have a corner drop filter though water enters bottom uppards through wool before it drops to get pumped out and i get heaps of fry that get in there but never had 1 get stuck

or you could just add some jap mesh pad up high cut it to hang alittle over the glass it would be good for 2 things
1 exta filtration
2 alow fry to eat crap build up but stop them entering the drop ?

i hope that makes sence let me know it you dont understand ?

These are the sponges I used to cover my intake, I don't have any trouble with them clogging up...I do take them off and rinse under the tap every 2 weeks or so...Not too hard...I also have no trouble with my air lift sponge filters
I run a hang on back & a sponge filters in all my smaller tanks..with the intake covered with one of those sponges in the ebay link...)
Had two spawns with my bns..with large numbers of fry...kept in with parents for two months or more...

Hi all,
I use the same type of coarse PPI10 sponge as Moo for filter intakes etc., as she says it keeps fry and plant leaves etc out of the filter, but doesn't clog like tights or a finer sponge would.
