What is the best way to rid a tank of small snails? I have a 6 foot tank that has about 16 Lcats - L134's, L333's and a few other types of L's as well as 2 Discus.
Thanks
Colin

I think Assassin snails are pretty hard to get in AUS.

What type of snails are in the tank? pond type?

Hi,

I also have these pests in all tanks.there are a few options
1. Go to the LFS and ask if they hire out a loach only things is they are hard to catch once in a tank.
2. If not maybe consider buying a pakistan / yo yo loach, they are small and munch through these like chocolate
3. What I do is go snail hunting once a day and pick out the biggest and dispose of them and the small ones squash them.
4. Get a snail trap.
5. I do not think assasin snails are available, but not sure on that.
cheers jk

Snails

I am not sure if they are Assassin snails but they look very similar, I have a clown loach that is now quite big now. I thought he may of eaten them, but there is still hundreds or the little buggers.

Clown loaches are lazy fish. Yoyo loaches or skunk loaches are great snail eaters. Only problem with loaches is they need to be kept in groups of 5+. Loners do not act like loaches when they don't have other loaches to interact with.

I had a problem in my 30 gal last years with pond snails. I had to tare it down and set it back up.

Maybe also reduce feeding or what I do in one tank is place a piece of veg in it overnight then early in the morning the snails are feasting on this and remove....

Would u like to sell me 2 small ones please?
My LFS hasn't got any, I need 2 small ones for my edge,
MTS problem in both tanks.
+1, lemme know! :hi:

... wait, they don’t breed like crazy do they? how long did it take you to build up 500? ... if so would kinda seem odd to swap one infestation for another.. lol? :dk:

Hi there,
Sounds all too familiar to me.
I have first hand experience with these snails as well and they are so hard to get rid off once they have established themeselves.
I have tried snail baiting them as suggested by the previous post but this is a long proces but will never eliminate all of them.
You can try and use a product available in aquariums called snail rid. However this is only transient and will only kill surface snails. But I am sure your snails are in the gravel as well, so this may not be effective either. At least that is what I have found out anyway. I tried doing all of these about 6months ago and thought I had them beat, but 6months in and well their back!!
Only 3 weeks ago, I tried a different approach. Drastic, but I didn't want to chance it again.
What I did was the following:
Quarantined discus, tetras, BNs, Peps, royal whips, Clown & Butterfly plecs
Live plans in the bath for a week, treated with snail rid and throughly washed every 2nd day.
As for the tank & gravel I completely emptied the tank. The gravel, spread on a cloth matt & baked in the hot sun for over a week. This killed all the snail & more importantly the eggs. If this is too mich trouble, then just buy new gravel & start a fresh. If you want to keep the gravel which you dried, you must run the filter with heaps of carbon to remove the nitrites from the decaying snails. Oh, by the way don't forget to clean your filter either as those dam snails will live in your filter.
Bottom line, make sure your cover all bases. Once all this is down, re-setup your tank again. It is heaps of work, but it will be well worth it.
A lesson for me from now on, is never trust the water where you acquire your fish from. No matter how clean & trust worthy the place is, it may always carry snail egss, especially if when getting live plants.
As I said, I diid this a couple of weeks ago and only time will tell how successful I am. But as this is round two, I am confident will will work.
Summary; quarantine your fish. Wash everything & use chemicals for plants, kill snails burried in the gravel by drying them out. Then re-set up your tank.

I hope this helps, not sure if there is an easier way, but this I am sure will work.

i hate snails the only way to rid this from your tank is to tare it down filter and all i had to do it once and i treated with snail kill chemicals

i just have to say if you go down the path of chemicals be very very careful in dose and air in your aquarium.

if you dont strip down your tank or treat with chemicals then all you can do is manage the with traps and start feeding less ild say half of what your feeding! and over time they will be only a few. as snail only survive and breed if there is food! and setting food traps works best if there very hungry !
good luck
