Very sad evening/morning. Our big boy 'Bill' has died this morning after getting bloat the previous night.....

We noticed him looking bigger than normal and lethargic yesterday late afternoon so started right away on the de-shelled peas. He didn't touch them. Later that night around 11 he was looking huge, really bloated, protruding eyes and vent so we separated him from the rest of the tank (not easy catching a clown in a 8'x4' tank!)

We gave him extra air and more peas and got on the phone to the vets.

Now for obvious reasons we couldn't take him to the vet as the trip would have killed him. We knew exactly what drugs we needed but even though we are both vet students they would prescribe the medication without seeing the fish but also wouldn't come out to see him. We called around with no luck so spoke to one of our friends who did have the relevant drugs and she posted them right away.

We finally went to bed around 4.30 hoping he would hold on till the morning but unfortunately he just couldn't manage :(

The clowns are really vicki's but we were both in tears!

Following all this my question is...

Has the tropical fish hobby moved on enough that people would pay for a vet to come out and treat their fish? I appreciate cost would be a issue but would people want such a service? We don't qualify for another 2 years but it could be something I could pass on to the BVMA.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys

I know of several vets who treat Reptiles and the like.
Fish would be the next stage.
A few vets deal with Fish farms

Far more interesting is this one

sorry for your loss, I know the feeling of loosing a big one:cry: tank never looks the same ... dreaded bloat....too bad we can't seem to catch the symptoms earlier, before the fish is too far gone.
Total bummer, Georgie

I am sorry for your loss but i Think it would of been better to go to the local aquatic store gets some advice and get the correct medication for it - i do not know anything about illness or such when it comes to fish but - in my eyes he would of stodd a better chance if u went to the LFS and got there advice

Majority of people on here have been keeping fish for a LONG time and know how to deal with any illness. And quite frankly when it comes to my lfs anyway the local student drop outs who sell gibbys to biorb owners just dont cut the mustard!

I agree with JoePlec ! LFS manager gave me bad medicine and advice, swore it was the best for my prob. You know the rest, lost my entire tank, gutted, and swore never use them again. Questionable fish, and advice, and try to count how many tanks are running on the same pump? :yes:sickness in one tank = all tanks..... find real Aq. stores and trust in the forums.

The people on the forums have years of experience and are willing to help and advise us , they care about the animal and they let us know what we are doing right and wrong to keep our plecs happy... they are rich with knowledge from years of keeping these fish and willing to share that knowledge... I honestly can not say the same about those who got a job at a lfs , hummm, how many years have they kept a variety of fish, know the workings of filters, water , illness, ect? gonna bet not much... worth getting advice about your favorite fish who has suddenly taken ill from a dude that just got a job cuz he kept goldfish when he was a kid, or do you think it's better to ask those who have been living , breathing and enjoying (and sometimes grumbling) all the work that goes into this ? Me ? I still re-live that awful morning, and won't be calling a car mechanic unless my '85 Blazer is on the blink .
