It is an inherant problem with the Juwel light units - Juwel are aware of it and have been for some years it just seems that they have not or can not sort it out, the issue is the seal on the light unit - it lets in moisture which collects inside causing issues all the wholesalers are aware of it, I would imagine many other retailers are too.

Just from my experience as a Saturday lad in a aquatic shop, we replaced at least one a month. The wholesalers were rubbing their hands as Juwel would never replace FOC. Just my experience though. Also they are very crafty with bulbs. Both in size and longevity. But hey just my experience.

Good advice Brian . Juwel will always listen to customers problems.

I have sold Juwel for 20 years and always found them to be one of the best around...Yes, they had problems with the light units, but they never hid from the problem...They supplied replacement units Foc for nearly 2 years before some people started taking the ***s and sent back units way past the warranty...Juwel have taken a harder stance on this now, we have to fill in a service card with customers details and proof of purchace date...If no receipt is shown we can still return under warranty if the unit is within two years of the manufacture stamp on the unit... We get very little returns now.

I had never thought about or heard about this happening but when I looked at this post I read it out to my wife, within minutes we had two new fire alarms installed next to my rio 180! Thanks for the heads up even if it is a long shoot - the wife is back on her chocolate diet due to the shock!lol

While it not nice to have a light unit go on fire, I can assure you it is not a common fault with them...When I said in a previous post thet juwel had problems with the light units...It was more a case of the light unit just failing to work... I have sold 1000's of Juwel aquariums over the years and had many light units returned faulty, but never one that went on fire...I hardly get any returns now. Every manufacturer has faulty products from time to time and I have sold most of whats available out there, and imho Juwel are still one of the best if not the best out there.
