100% h2o change &matured filter& substrate......help prity please

hello my friends

I need more help as always.....

for reason in my 'help major amound of dead pleco' thread on dereks advice have completed a 100% water change...

here's my question.....

with a matuer filter and matured substrate with a 100% h20 change..... do i have to cycle the tank?

my view is. I would cycle it for a period of 7days. My reason is that with brand new water, it is so different to what the fish were used to. Even a slow aclimatisation in my view would not help. I think even water need to be cycled as each element plays a part in the system. just my view cheers jk :thumbup:

I find that fish can handle massive water changes as long as you take your time and acclimatise slowly..I know what your saying Jan, but I think that leaving the fish for 7 days in the sml Q tank may be the wrong move...I would add a good dose of prime and give the lrg tank a good 24 hours to settle, then try the fish...You always have the Q tank to fall back on if you feel it is not working

Filters cycle, not tanks. You should be okay so long as the parameters weren't wildely different & you've taken care of any chlorine/heavy metals/etc by adding some water conditioners.

thinking outside the box here . how many litres is the small tank? and the large tank?

at times i have transferd all water and fish from a small tank to a larger tank. only part filling the larger tank. then over the next few days added more water. with this method you would loose the fall back of having the qt tank. was the qt tank filters kept mature running in another tank or fed with ammonia?

lorne talk about picky......but thank you for pointing out my mistake (it has beeen a long long day) beside i know a tank cant cycle....it has no legs!! heheheheheheeee...no..no one else laughing? o well never mind!

Interesting idea rpp ..... i shallll ponder this idea with a stiff drink to alert my dulled sences!

Not being picky, just pointing out that people always talk about cycling a tank but the fact is that its the filters being cycled. Thus, if you filters are already cycled, then no need co cycled again.

If you have the good bacteria already in the filters, it shouldnt take long for the tank walls etc to get a good bio film growing on there. Just try not to overload the tank with fish too soon. Build it up slowly.
