My external filter has started leaking from the main seal and from were the power cord goes in. So I need to buy a new one. How long can the bacteria survive in the filter with out it running. I have to work tomorrow and it will have been switched off for 20 hrs.

I will be ok for a day or 2, but what I would do is remove the media from the water as that can go stagnant and place the media into lrg poly bags with plenty air as you would in transporting fish, Tie a knot in the bag so the media doesn't dry out, it will keep for days that way.

Ok thanx. Can I run the new filter with the new media or do I have to put some of the old media in it? I have an internal filter running also. My tanks about 140 liters should I get a 1000 lt or about 600 lt an hr filter. I'm keeping peppermint bristlenoses.

new media would need to be cycled from scratch so always best to use as much old media as possible.
And flow wise, i'd always go for more where possible
