I dont usually have much luck with breeding chiclids, tried several ram types , but only got young to a few days old and then seemed to loose them. But now I have some baby apistos, they have been free swimming for a week now so that is a record for me. trying to photo them but as I approach with the camera, she makes an alarm signal and they all sit down on the sand at the bottom and dont show against the sand!

Well done!

I am considering moving my cacatuoides pair to a small pico to get them going, the female has coloured up nicely.

Do you have yours in a community set up?

mine are in a 90L tank in the living room, a couple of small dither fish. cherry shrimps, and 2 young cories only, which chased out of sight!

Hi all,
Well done Irene and best of luck with them, if the female is out and about with the fry, they should be fine, as long as they get enough to eat. Apistos are much better parents than Rams, and even though A. agassizi is frequently for sale, it isn't that easy to breed, so it is a good achievement.

Have you got Micro and Grindal worms? PM if you haven't they make fry rearing much easier. I usually feed a mixture of these with some finely ground Astax Red crumb, and usually the fry will feed on the crumb if they are attracted by the movement of the worms. BBS are even better, and so are the bigger Paramecium.

The other really useful "food source" is a big chunk of moss, which snags passing worms, and also supplies rotifers etc.

cheers Darrel

thanks, yes I use micro worms and powder fry food. I feed quite a few times during the day. Also some plants and java moss in there. will add a bit more tomorrow.

Very nice, indeed, Dad is a handsome fella.

I came home from work and my female was dead so that's the breeding idea out the window!

oh dear, what a pity, I lost my last female, i wondered if the male had chased her too much.
I have my suspicions that he is to blame.

He is a big boy, twice her size, she had only just started to show her mature colouration.

None left where I bought them either, will have to keep my eye out although they were the only Apistos I have seen here in 4 years!
