Hi everyone,

I would like to ask about few question...

How many days it takes for the pleco eggs to hatch?

I tried to leave it with dad but the dad eat most of the eggs. The only one that hatch is the one i separated after 5 days. How can i solve this problem?

The best way to harvest eggs is?

John

Hi, time varies by type of plec and water temp and conditions. but I would say most plecs I have raised seem to hatch between 4 and 8 days. then they are just an egg sack with tiny head and tail. then they can take another week or 2 before they leave the cave.
usually dad only eats the eggs if he is disturbed a lot -by other fish trying to get in cave or by person looking in cave with torch etc.
but if he really is an egg eater then you may have to remove the eggs to a fry saver.
what sort of plec are they and do you have a photo of tank and cave?

Hi Irene,

It is a l129. I think the reason might be disturbance by me...I disturb them two times previously...one time I accidentally, another is the fifth day when I try to check how many eggs left by turning the cave...5-6 eggs but still haven't hatch but with eyes formed. I don't have confident to take it out so I put it back only to find all eaten up. The last one I took it out and it hatched.

No experience to keep pleco eggs previously but I think I learned some lessons this time. Hopefully no more mistake for next batch. I wasted the eggs... :(
This is my trial l numbers coz my l260 females bloated as well...I will only put cave if I can successfully keep l129 eggs...otherwise it will also be a waste.

John

Hi Irene,

This is my setup.

Any recommendation to improve it further?

i would personally add a piece of slate or wood over the cave entrance. This makes the males more confortable. Nice set up though. cheers jk

yes, cover caves a bit with wood or something so there is more cover. add more wood perhaps, also add back cover to tanks (eg stick backing paper or paint black ) so they will feel more secure, like if a river bank there.
good luck.
