Yeah I use purigen in a bag all the time. Its usually a part of my canister media.
First couple of times I had it in there I had to replace it with a recharged one every canister clean but now the tank has settled down and I only replace it every second or third canister clean, which is usually mainly cleaning the gunk out of the tubing.
