OK so I'm only a beginner at breeding plecs but i would one day like to breed zebs.
Just wondering exactly how ambitious am i being here.
How hard are they to breed? Is there any special requirements that make it difficult? Any information would be great.
Thanx Aaron

In the house of gee
No different from breeding any other hypancistrus. The only main difference is you will see even less of a Zebra plec. Normal Hypan set up with the temp around 86/30 mark and good quality water will get you results.

They aren't that hard to breed but takes a good two, three even four years to reach the mature age to breed, unless you manage to get some adults. Plus they are expensive especially in Aus. They need their own tank/breeding tank as they don't compete very well for food with other plecs.

Yes they are expensive in Australia, 10 years ago when i first fell in love with them i could have got them for $500au each, last year i heard through the grapevine of someone selling them for $2000au each don't know how many or what sizes.

I am getting a little worried about availability in Australia haven't seen one for sale (apart from the 2k ones) for a long time.

Are there any Aussie breeders on this site? Has anyone seen them for sale in Australia in recent times?

They can be found with ease at the moment, usually there are none but there seems to be a few at consistently good sizes for sale.
There are some in the Aus classifieds now Ford2 has for sale, Mike W also has some (or had) and there where more but i cant recall who had them.
