I use endler live bearers as they are like guppies, a little smaller and dont breed quite as prolific as ordinary guppies. you will be forever rehoming baby guppies.
cories are good too as they help to eat uneaten plec food and will lay eggs quite readily the day after a big water change. (i use panda and sterbai as these dont mind the wamer temps of hypan breeding tanks)

There hasn't really been much study into whether the pheromones from one breeding fish can promote others in the tank to breed (would be really interesting, and I do have a scientific paper to write this year at uni so I might do it on this!).

I personally think it could be possible... If you already have breeding stock you could also try using some of their water in with your less prolific Ls.

Hope that helps.

i have a trio of sturisoma's which refused to breed, i introduced some endler guppies so trigger something. now my harlequins, chillia rasbora, ember tetra's, corydoras hastatus, C. pygmaeus, and may many more have started to breed.

obviously no scientific evidence to back this up but there's something linked in my opinion.

i usually have a pair or trio of royal whiptails in each tank which seems to make very little difference to the breeding of other L's.... but their fry certainly make good snacks for the hypans in particular... and the blue/green phantoms hoover them up too.... royals usually breed every 7-10 days so theres a good snack on the way soon.... plus they clean the glass for me too!
bonus/bonus....

my point was the introduction of endler guppies to trigger the whips to spawn (and thus helped with other fish). not intoduction of whips to help L's spawn

Hi,

I started with 2 mosquito fish, seven platies in my large pleco tank. Now i have mosquito fish and platies well in the triple figures in the last 3 months, then about a month ago i had my first spawns of L numbers. I believe in away it may help having other fish breding in the tanks.

Regards,

Romen

I thought mosquito fish were an obnoxious species and as such we are not allowed to breed them.

The tank originally was a freshwater native tank and the mosquito fish where there to feed my natives. When i converted it into my L number tank there where still two left, so i left them in there and they bred.

I have always used Mollies in most of my tank's they do have a effect with pheromones/hormones in my time breeding, snails are useful if a breed that will eat the rubbish between cleans.

I have seen most male catfish regardless of type eat snails in cave.( so in my opion snails most type's are more useful than not )

Pheromone sprays are used by some human's for good and bad!!<3<3:cry::drool:

Some big dog races are fixed using this so this is one way so noone flames me.( fish farmers also inject fish with above also )
