first time with bn eggs.

hi well im new to this so sorry if im inexperianced well here it goes.

i got 2 BN plecos thinking both male but was suprised to see eggs in a pleco cave today, and the male fanning them.
so my question is really should i move the cave with the dad and eggs carefully useing same water in another tank.
the tank their in now has, 2 angels (large), 4 gouramis, 20+ guppys, RTS, jade eye (t-bar), firemouth, Appisto, 4 corys, 1 baby common pleco, and a wild clown pleco.

it has LARGE gravel, lots of caves and live plants.
i could always add more live plants if needed.

Hi Jon,

Congrats on your spawn. It really depends if you wish to breed them or not. I would usually leave the dad with the eggs till they hatch. Looking at what you state, your tank is full of hiding places and caves etc, so some baby BN should be able to survive . If you wish to observe, place dad and cave in a fry saver and watch, however again you must ask yourself do you wish to breed or not. cheers jk :thumbup:

Hi Jon, I agree with bigbird, BN are tough plecos, babies will survive especially if you have a lot of hiding places, either way you would save more of them if you put them into a fry saver, with or without their dad!

Agree with what has been said. If you're not fussed on breeding then leave where they are and I'm sure a few will make it. If you want to breed then a dedicated tank to raise the fry is best but remember you will get spawns every 3-4 weeks but your fry will take 10-12 weeks to be large enough to move on so you will soon be over run if you're not prepared :wb:

hi thanks for the replys. i have moved the dad and eggs. but some eggs have gone white and some have a white *spot* on them and rest fine.

what does that mean?

Hi,

Ok white usually means not fertilised or fungused. try to remove these if you can. Also if it is the first batch, the male might need some learning and for a few batches it might be the case till the male gets the hang of it. I would make sure you have adequate water movement in the fry saver. Also as a tip when you move the log/dad and eggs, make sure they are all fully under water and you use the same water in the new tank or fry saver. cheers jk :thumbup:

I would have moved them because i think the angels would have had the young.
often first batch of babies has some unfertilsed eggs, these can fungus and then fungus spread to other eggs so try and remove -try a turky baster, but sometimes they are stuck to good eggs and cant be moved, then try some melafix as may help. dad will not like you touching his eggs and he may abandon them so you may need a fry saver.
