The only gripe i have is the little ball on the intake tube gets gunky esp in a plec tank, then it slows the flow down.
Could just take the ball out i spose lol
This is my only gripe with them too, I have 105 through 405, and I have had to take the little balls out, or they clog in a couple of weeks, especially in the planted Plec tank:wb::wb::wb::wb:

Depends on if its a canister or an internal power filter.
I have heard good reports on the Fluval canister (beyond my price range usually) but the internal filter stops when it need cleaning; result=dead fish.

I have a couple of Eheims of various sizes in canister and internals; no problems with any of them really except they are flaming expensive to buy initially.

My favourite is the Otto both in a canister and a power filter. I have a few of these and they are like Tonka trucks, you are flat out breaking them.
They are about the best quality for price I found unless I am splurging the money to get Ehiem.

I found too many dead spots in my Eheim resulting in un-used chemical filteration media, but i do love the low wattage. The price on an eheim is through the roof i just bought a replacment impellor $36.
My Fluval have a great filteration pathe (no media is missed).
I have never owned a tetratec, but will invest in one now, as it does seem to sound the most reliable.

A point on the cost of Eheim

My first Eheim cost me around £25:00 it was the fore runner to the 2217 I believe
The current model can be had for around £80:00

When I brought my first Eheim I was being paid the grand sum of £18:00 per week so around £80:00 per months so I could have brought 3 filters with a months money.

Now I would get around 15 filters with a months money.

Cheap as Chips my dear boy

Yes all the other stuff is cheap but its cheap for a reason its not going to last

I still had this filter around 2 years ago and only dumped it due to the plastic becoming brittle

I voted Eheim but I also like Marineland (US version of TetreTec I believe). I do use Fluval internals with no problems.

Well i voted eheim, but i currently have 2 tanks running juwel internals another with a tetratec internal, another unknown little internal and my main tank has a eheim external running alongside a hailea external which is pretty crap compared to the eheim. The flow constantly gets slowed on the hailea and if you clean it to get the flow going you lose the good bacteria, hence i got the eheim to run alongside it lol.

I voted other as I have a couple of aqua one CF1200 canisters running which do a good job with minimal maintenance, I've found the fluval internals to be a pain to get into to clean. I've a few interpet internals which I picked up very cheap brand new but I've found they can get very hot.

No need to keep an eye on this thread Tony just google Eheim and get yourself a true bit of German quality.

High flow
Low wattage
German built and will last forever

I rest my case:D:D

The verdict is in,Eheim..

Did some browsing in the stores to see what i'm looking at.Went to a Chain store first and they carried Fluval,Eheim and Rena.

Rena was crossed off my list due to size, too boxey.

Fluval looked nice but there was only 1 kind and was more expensive then Eheim by 8%.

I liked the sizes of Eheim.Looked at the Ecco at the chainstore and price caught my eye,10 dollars cheaper then Fluval. Then went to the specialty fish store and they carried both the Classic and the Pro models.I knew the price would be a little higher here because all they do is Fish and of high quality at that.

Thanx G,make sure Eheim cuts you a piece for the sale.

how about adding other brands to the poll?

I have TetraTec Ex 1200 and Fluval 305. So far so good.

The best I found and last the distance is Hydor or Sachem but both pain in the butt when the time comes for cleaning.

Eheim not as good as it used to....bloody noisy straight off the bat, no matter what I do can't fix the problem.

I'm using my FX5 as a Street Fighter 4 gaming table for my fighting stick. so can't comment on it yet...lol

Cheers

I have used various filters over 35 years and I would never use any now other than Fluval or Eheim although all I have ay present are Fluval ( 3 externals and 10 internals ).Many of the others have given me nothing but problems. The build quality of Fluval has gone down a bit over the years but they are still good if you are careful.
