if you find that somebody has posted a very helpful answer, please click on the helpful answers button on the bottom right hand side of the post, each time a member has this ticked on one of their posts, it registers on their profile.
you can see how many times each member has posted helpful answers in their public profile.
If you look in your profile or anyone elses, under the statistics tab there is a section that looks like this

The question marks would be the username.

Not all forums have this enabled as we would like to promote helpful posts within the main forums and not forums like the offtopic forums or announcements. It is however enabled in all the articles forums as all member written articles are very important to the site.
