Hi folks

For some time I have had a small group of 5 L030 Oligancistrus sp. The aim is to breed this fish.

Information is very sparse and also a bit contradictory.

Has any one tried/ got some way to spawning these fish?

Any tips or pointers would be welcome.

Right now they are around 3" total size, in a tank with gravel substrate, reverse flow U/G filter running off a Eheim 2126.

Caves are 6 x slate box type. lots of bog wood and almond leaves.

Temp around 27 c, pH around 7.0, TDS under 210, Kh 4, all tests showing flat for ammonia ect, nitrate low under 30 ppm,Dissolved oxygen is high due to eheim 1060 running a spray bar.

Food is blood worm , brine shrimp ect every two or three days. With veg every week in the form of courgette and veg flake.

Water changes every two days at 5%.

I have tried all the normal triggers ie cool water change , big water change , hard water change , soft water change and pH / TDS changes .
Conditioning feeding ect

I have had several caveings of two fish and got excited, but sadly next day no fish in the cave and no eggs any were.

I did have one "Scraping" indecent were what I guessed to be a female was "Chewed" ,I based my sexing on head size and shortened Pectoral fins.

I think the balance is 3 females to 2 males again based on general rules for this genus.

I have also based my identification on the fish being slender and having a naked underside as with most of this genus.
I am sure these are not Parancistrus nudiventris the other spotted "Peppermint" due to size I have had these fish for over two years and they have not grown past the 3" mark. Also the do have the large eyes and slim body of L030.

Tank size is 24" long x 22" wide x 20" deep.

Thanks every one.

I do find that if I buy or build a group and have no expectations or belive they are to young or not the right mix sex wise I get fry.

I did start of with 15 small L030 and after sexing and grading for stud I had 5 left.

they were around 2" when I brought them.

I think I will just do a weekly water change and sit back and wait

Hows it going?
Still got a bit of chewing on what I think is the female, so that means I have a group with a female in it.

Moved them to a bigger tank and gave them a extra cave.

Increased the flow rate.
Would be great to spawn them as they are quite a striking fish

Regards Bob

well I really wish you good luck! I have not read of anyone breeding them, but then I dont suppose many have tried.
I have one of these lovely fish, I have had him (or her) about 5 years, from tiny size, and he is only about 3 inches. I would love to fine a mate, or companion, for him but dont seem to see these in the shops anymore. they were plentiful about 6 years ago, relatively. SO I keep looking for any in the shops but not stumbled across any.

I originality brought around 20 of these fish and finally sorted out 5 that I was happy with.

The rest I sold to a LFS at a stupid price .

last night the male was trying to get a female in to a cave but she was not interested ..Hope springs eternal and as Ian Drury said "its the hope that springs right up your behind"

maybe the males mature before the females, so perhaps they will soon.
I also think the fish are a deep water fish the size of the eyes to me looks like they live in black water and at some depth.

I am keeping my fingers crossed with these as They are one of the best looking fish I have

Total darkness for a while?

How big are they supposed to grow?
