Hi All
This is my second spawn of L046 but the male is a first timer.
Tonight he kicked out 3 fry then within an hour he kicked out another 2!
I made a trap from a plastic container and other bits! I managed to collect the fry with again something I cobbled together.
I had to go out for about 2 hour and when I got home he had kicked out another 2.
they are all yoke sack so only just hatched, do you think he started doing this as because they are moving and possibly tickling him or is it just because he is new to this??
Im aware me messing in the tank has not helped but I could not see the fry go to waste by being eaten or sucked up by the filter.

Hi Brenda

Wow thanks for that thought! that is something I would never have thought of.
The two I think are females if you look at group2 again are the one with the U on her back that you said was female she is confirmed as she is mum of this spawn the other is the one with a u but the top is filled in so like a D on its side. These two where fighting like mad under the log that the spawning site is in and the male was home at the time. This happened Thursday night then they caved fri sat and I have the fry tonight.
The 7 fry are now in a trap so no one can eat them.

good you saw them. mine have kicked them out in the past and i was not sure if just a new dad, or i disturbed him, or as you suggest they are confused once the fry move about.
I had one male who regularly kicked them out then he stopped but i realised he culled them instead as he would only hatch about 4 as he did not like more than that to manage!

Count about 3 days after you think the eggs have hatched and steal the wrigglers.
They are reasonably hardy for a frysaver or seive at that age but cant quite suction down really hard in the log.
Dad won't come out of the log and he shouldnt care either if it means girlies trying to get back in his log.

I now have 9 in the trap! any idea how many more he could have in there? To remove the fry in this way would be easy if they had spawned in 1 of the 12 caves in the tank he is in a hollow in a huge piece of bogwood so not possible.
I did do this with my L270s the male caved the female with in days but I don't think she was ready after 4 days he came out and she was dead.
This could have just been bad luck I don't know, so I would rather leave him with something rather than risk another female.

While checking for more out casts he backed out the log enough for me to count another 4 fry in the log! There maybe more but without putting a torch on that's all I could see and im mot going down that road as don't want to stress him more.

Hello Ladies and gents

Have I dropped a clanger, done it right or should I have done things differently?
I ended up with 9 fry in my home made fry saver and I think 6 in the log with dad.
Once the fry lost there yoke sacks I let the 9 fry back in to the main tank expecting the others out of the log this was 5 days ago. I can now only find 4 of them and as far as I can tell the young in the log are still there!
They maybe hiding in the tank as they are good at that as I have found out in the past. Is it possible some may have gone back in the log??????
What would you have done?????

Tim

Be careful what you are feeding the adults. Sometimes the little fry cannot handle a rich meaty food straight off. I go more to Hikari algae wafers and a bit of token veg flake and a little viformo which they really love but in moderation.
