how big is the tank, when did you do the last water change, what are you feeding? Any new fish that you added ? Do you have an airstone ? Usually heavy breathing is lack of oxygen. When did you clean the filters last ? will wait for your replies before more thinking from me, but remember, the more info and stuff we get from you the better. Lets go jeads up. As you are using SYD tap water , check the water before using as well. cheers jk

I done a water change yesterday . Clean the filters 2 weeks ago iv just added a few l333the tank is 120 lt I don't have a air stone cause I'm using a wave maker the . Only reason there are other fish in there is I'm setting up my room at the moment waiting for tanks to cycle . Iv also bin using rain water for the last 3 weeks . None of the other Plecos are breathing like this. And I lost one few weeks back could it be fluke ?

Where in NSW do you live (generally) I stopped using rainwater due to airborne contaminants getting washed in, that was when I lived in a town with a lot of wood and coal burning fires. Just a thought.

have you got enough hiding spots for him ? it might just take time for him to settle in. If I were you, I would catch all fish. redesign the tank and then put them all back in the tank. They will then adjust and find their own favourite caves, formation etc. Then I hope it settles the problem. I would also do one more water change. sorry , good luck cheers jk

A lot of thermometers are usually out by two degrees or more so he may have been boiling!

Keep an eye in the temp and maybe ease up on the rainwater WC. I use good old fashioned tap water these days with a bit of prime and my fish (with the exception of the ones who have suffered at the fins of my manic murderer) are thriving.

Hope the little guys levels out for you.

ammonia 50 ppm
holy crap thats massive... must be a typo..... do you mean 0.5ppm or 5ppm of ammonia ???

in perth tap water generally comes with 1ppm of ammonia... 2ppm of chlorine and chloramine as well (i havent measured it yet as i dont think theres a test kit available for it) but to estimate chloramine is trial and error... air ammonia off the water over night and then add enough prime to break down the chloramine and retest for ammonia... trial and error stuff with no real accurate result but it has given me the knowledge of how much prime to add to neutralize chlorine and break chloramine bond and then furthur neutralize the released chlorine and ammonia....

i think the mundaring weir is the only water source that has chloramine in your water...

so to remove ammonia from your aging barrel simply add airstone just under the waters surface and have a small circulating pump in the bottom and usually 1ppm of ammonia will air off over night (12 hours)

test ammonia before and after you do this to confirm it for yourself :)
