L134 spawning

Hi have just seen some spawning behaviour from my l134 leopard frog. Was waching the tank with my red night led tank light and saw a cave occupied with two in, male came out started dancing around, then the female started making her way out and I thought NO! She's gonna get away but that wasn't the case she and the male was outside the cave with the male dancing around her then she entered the cave backwards with the male following. Shortly afterwards another male started to try and enter the cave this went on for a little while with no success. I decided to take that male out and move him to a DIY fry saver and the pair seem fine.
Have a question how long with the female be in there for untill she leaves? If she does lay eggs should I leave then to it or try get the eggs out?

Definitely spawning behaviour there :yes:

Once experienced mine are usually in and out overnight but in the early spawns it could be anything up to a week :fr: which I know isn't good for your fingernails but you have to trust the male on this one.

I wouldn't have thought the tetras would have mouths big enough to predate on the fry should they come out, but If they do come out with yolk sacs intact I would pop them in a fry saver with gentle flow till they have used it all up :)

Thanks had a look this morning and the female has left the cave and the male is deep inside fanning his tail not sure if an eggs are there as it's tight and you can't see past him plus don't want to shine light just

Just noticed that a few dead eggs or empty casing leaving the cave, so I thought the male may of been eating them. Lifted up the cave tilted downwards and he came out quite easily then I saw the eggs. Moved them over to a fry saver with slight current and added extra air stone. How long till the eggs hatch? have counted about 25 eggs remaining with at least about 6 empty casing found. Photo attached

Tank conditions are kh4 gh6 ph6.9 temp25
Running fluval 305 with spray bar, eheim wet n dry external, aquaclear 30 powerhead and a sponge filter plus k1 moving bed filter.






The photo below farthest cave to the left was the one with eggs.

well done. those eggs are looking good. I normally leave eggs in with dad unless he kicks them out (new dads sometimes do), tank look great too.
torch is not best thing as can disturb dad and make him either kick them out or worse -eat the eggs. I find if i need to look in a cave then a flash photo is better as its a bit like lightening and over before he knows it. but never take more than a few pics at a time.
eggs will hatch after a few days and still looks like an egg but with a tail. it will be quite a few more days before they look like plecs and get some markings. dont need to feed until egg sack absorbed.

Agree with Irene, I much prefer dad to hatch the eggs as he can pick out the bad ones and get rid of them. Eggs do look good though and hopefully they should hatch within the next 5 days although your temp is a bit low at 25 so may take longer :dk:

Thanks everyone, think this thread might be better suited to breeding log, if mod could move it thanks. Took a little video on Saturday do you think that's enough flow and air?



Will get some more photos up as I can start to see either the head or tail starting to pop out.

Tuesday 28th feb


Thursday 1st march - noticed that two off the eggs have hatch can see the tail wiggling.




Quality of pictures not the best will try get some better ones up.

All 25 have popped out, amazing to watch. Got some photos which I'll put up in the morning. Once the sac is absorbed what's the best to feed them? I was thinking of crushed flake or prima with hikari algae wafers.
