L144 fry

I have some L144 fry that were born about 4 days ago. Their yolk sacs look like they are disappearing. I am just wondering when I should start feeding them and if Hikari Algae Wafers would be ok. They are in my community tank right now, but I am getting ready to move them to a grow out tank in the next few days.

Thanks for the help.

Here is the tank I just set up for the fry.

It is a 10gal tank with the back painted black. It has a heater, sponge filter (sponge is in the 20high to cycle), 3 pieces of DW (2 are floating), and some PVC caves. On Tuesday, I am gonna move the sponge over and take out the two airstones. I am also going to add a bunch of Java Fern. The light is a 15watt 8,000K strip light. I am going to find something closer to the 6500K range so I can get some algae going and for the plants I will add. Going to keep it bare bottom as it will be easier to clean and easier to get the fish out when the time comes.

i would start feeding the next day when the egg sack is gone. Maybe as a tip, replace the new wood in the fry grow out tank, with wood that you already have in the main tank. Thus you already have the aufwuchs on this wood or transfer some other items from the main tank over. Make sure the water is also the same as the main tank. cheers jk

Thanks for the advice. This is my first batch, so I have no experience.

totally agree with bighbird.
First batch is always the worst interms of learning curve!
I use crushed up flakes/wafers. Make sure you put veg in there as well. Feed them like you do the adults... alternate foods etc and they will do just fine. Keep us up to date :D

Thanks for the advice. I am hoping the learning curve will not be too hard on them. I am probably going to move the fry on Monday or Tuesday. The sponge should be pretty well seeded by then. I may have to boil the DW though to get it to sink. We shall see.

I would get them eating a week or two before the move. Veg flake food and a blanched lettuce leaf or cucumber. Something soft to start with. Be sparing with the flake until they are pouncing on it or it will go off and be wasted.

Throw a sliver of wood or two to the fry saver. They will suck on it and figure out what those sucky mouths of theirs are for, to clean food particles off surfaces, not just to hang on with.

When you move them, you might want to lower the water level a bit as you can top up with a bit more of parents water through the day and save a bit of waterchanging till the next day.

You may also need to turn the intensity of those airstones down a bit until the fry are strong enough to swim away from the current of it.

If you see any bits of parent poop airline syphone it out and add to the fry saver. They will eat it and develop the good belly bacteria they need to start breaking down food.

Good to know. I added some really small pieces of algae tabs in there today. I think a couple of them found it already, but not sure. I am going to try the lettuce thing tomorrow though. Thanks.

Maybe I can break off a small piece of wood from some of the stuff in the tank. May try that tomorrow too.

I thought that would help a bit, but was not sure. I will do that for sure. I have been holding off on the water change in that tank so I didn't mess with them too badly.

You may also need to turn the intensity of those airstones down a bit until the fry are strong enough to swim away from the current of it.

Those airstones are not permanent. That was just to keep the water from going stagnant. I am planning on a single air powered sponge filter in the tank, but the air pump is currently powering their little breeder box while the sponge cycles. That air pump is going with them when they move.

If you see any bits of parent poop airline syphone it out and add to the fry saver. They will eat it and develop the good belly bacteria they need to start breaking down food.

That little breeder box is catching some of the stuff from the tank, so I am sure there is some in there, but I will keep that in mind.
Thank you for all the help. I really appreciate it. And, I totally have avatar envy right now. That is my dream fish.<3

Pleco babies are doing well. I transferred mom, dad, and all the babies to the 10 gallon a few days ago. In another week, I am gonna start getting a 20 long together. Need to build the rack first though. But here it is.

Fry are a couple weeks old now. Gettin big fast and eating great. They are colored up already too. You can even see the blue eyes.

Not sure if the parents spawned again or not. I saw some really small babies, but they may have been not eating as much as the others. Not really sure yet.

Look what I woke up to.:)

Pretty awesome.

Ok, one question. Both times they have spawned, they have not laid the eggs in the PVC cave I have given to them. Right now I have 3/4" PVC in there. One fish just barely fits. You think I should replace it with 1"?

I think they'd like it rather dark for a cave instead of hospital white.
Have a look in the articles or equipment diy sections, there might be some homemade caves you could make, or buy a couple from the for sale section on this forum.
