Name: Megalancistrus parananus
Common Names: L113, L234
Location: Rio Parana, Rio Paraguay, Rio Uruguay
Photos:
Appearance: These guys are fairly closely related to Pseudacanthicus and the body is covered in spiny odontodes
Compatibility: Generally peaceful towards smaller catfish but very territorial with similar sized plecos. It isn't advisable to house more than one in an aquarium unless you have a huge tank
Sexing and Breeding: Males have a broader head, longer pectoral fins and a slimmer body. Males also have more odontode growth on the gill covers
Diet: Accepts vegetable matter such as algae/spirulina disks and fresh vegetables (lettuce, zucchini/courgette, eggplant/aubergine, capsicum, carrot, peas, preboiled spinach) as well as meaty foods, such as frozen foods (tubifex, mosquito larvae, blood worms, artemia), dry foods (freeze-dried foods, flakes, granules), carnivore sinking pellets, and occasionally some small pieces of shrimp, mussels, fish fillet.
Water parameters: Temp 20-27c PH 6-8
A large aquarium is needed and plenty of filtration for helping to keep the aquarium clean for this large pleco. Large rocks or pieces of wood are advisable to avoid being knocked around. Plants are likely to be uprooted. A current isnt neccessary although good water circulation is good.
Max Size: 70cms
Bred by: Not known to be bred
