Hi all

My L66s have spawned this is there 1st time and mine. The male had kicked out the eggs so i put them in a fry container i have 17 wriggers. How many days does it take them to use up there yolk sacks & what should i feed them once the sacks are gone?
Also the male has another female trapped i his cave. They have been in there for a day is it possible he can spawn so soon?

Cheers Lloyd.

congrats on the spawn and on hatching the eggs, i never have much luck with hatching them myself i only get a couple make it out the egg , i think it takes around 5 days for them to use up the yolk sack. i feed mine the same food as the adults but i crush it to a powder,i was advised to start feeding a couple of days before the yolk is used up.
cheers

congrats! well done, keep small warm water changes going, very gently, to keep water top qual.
I would feed young some crushed flakes, micro worms and squashed cooked peas and maybe some squashed tera prima or similar. very little and often.

Update

Thanks everybody for your advice.

I have 17 babies and they have nearly used up there egg sacks and they are doing well. Also the dad has another batch of eggs in his cave 5 days after kicking out the last lot.
Im well happy as i did nothing to trigger the spawn not like my L134's they are a nightmare to trigger.
Thanks Lloyd.:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Congratulations on the spawn:clap:

I use a pestle & mortar to crush a variety of dry foods into a powder. Mix it all together store it in an air tight container.
Its important at this stage to keep up with little water changes to keep the water tip top:yes:

Another update sorry no pics yet as my camera is not working. 17 fry from the first spawn are doing well and in a grow out tank. I have another 34 fry this time, doing well he quicked a couple of fry out so i got the rest of them out as i was not sure the other L66's would eat them or not. The yolk sacks are a lot smaller this time.

The male has the third female traped it his cave so i know now i have 1 male & 3 Females. He's a randy little devil.

perfect ratio for 66's... females usually take about 6 weeks to restock their bellies full of eggs... once they get into a routine you should get a spawn every 2 weeks...

and a good tip to stop eggs and fry coming out too early is to tilt the cave backwards a little so eggs and fry will go to the back of the cave making it easier for the male to look after them...

i have the same ratio and they spawned solid for 12 months every two weeks... a couple times i got double spawns which gives the male a break for a couple weeks... some people advised me to rest the male... but he's still going strong now about a year and a half... quite a big solid boy though!

and against most peoples advice i waterchange 30% daily now! i did lose some fry in the early days (prob nitrates being too high for fry) but now i never lose any fry at all...

baby brine is the ultimate food for them (in my opinion)

Congratulations Lloyd, it sounds like you have the L066 all sorted now and onto a successful breeding colony.

I have yet to breed mine at all but only because I was a cheap skate and bought fry to raise to maturity instead of adults to breed. lol.

Thanks for the tips Bigjohnno. Info taken on board and duly noted. :)
