Sorry for your loss ccole, I Love fish also do a range of pleco food pellets, is that safe to use?

Best thing to do is look at the ingredients, if you are still unsure then post them on here.



I am in no way defending P@H but this issue is a medication problem and other companies also use the same ingredients. The thread has turned from a medication problem to a company bashing one. If P@H did pay you compensation then that's far more than you would of got from most stores and tbh I never even seen anyone manage to get compensation for a medication that has wiped out their stock.

there is nothing about that on the lable thats why you can not see it lol
I agree i am not bashing pets at home as a company- i have bought other live stock than fish from there and they have lived healthy long lives.
The reason that the company is refunding me is because the 'love fish' range is made by pets@home and they recommend it as a company so if there is somthing wrong with the lable or contents they have to take responcibility... (but spelt right!!)

There is also no mention that is may be unsutible to fish without scales or other delicate fish....

I also use there frozen bloodworms and flakes

First up, I am sorry to hear of your loss.


Some sites say that it is a good antifungal med and to bathe the fish in it.
However, Phenoxyethanol is starting to become one of the more recommended ways of euthanising fish.

It may well be that it is the same ingredients as other brands, however I would have to imagine that it is not 100% the same.


I guess it comes down to a personal choice as to if you use it or not.
Just make sure you consider all the facts about the main ingredient before using it and use it carefully following the instructions precisely.

Synonyms: arosol, dowanol EP, dowanol EPH, emery 6705, ethylene glycol phenyl ether, ethylene glycol monophenyl ether, phenoxetol, phenoxyethanol, rose ether, phenoxyethyl alcohol, 1-hydroxy-2-phenoxyethane, phenylmonoglycol ether, 2-phenoxyethanol, glycol monophenyl ether, beta-hydroxyethyl phenyl ether, various trade names
Uses: Used as a fixative for perfumes, a bactericide (in conjunction with quaternary ammonium compounds), an insect repellent, a topical antiseptic, a solvent for cellulose acetate, dyes, inks and resins, in organic synthesis of plasticizers, in germicides, in pharmaceuticals, in cosmetics and in preservatives.

There are scientific reports out there stating that Phenoxyethanol not only affects the life span of an animal, it also affects their reproductive systems.


It's odd really, but when reading up on this, i keep on thinking of an ad that keeps coming on the radio about ecstacy. It states that drain cleaners, and other extremely harsh chemicals are used in the manufacturing of it. And then goes on to say that you wouldn't consume any of those, so why risk it. Knowing the risks involved with using it I would never use it.

wow bre thank you for writing that post and taking the time to share what you have learned (sorry went into teacher mode then! lol) what you have said has actually really concreted my worries about medication based on my expereince. i had totally no idea about the things the ingrediant could affect........

Sadly this product contains Glycol ethers it is I believe using this for its anti bacterial properties.
It relies on the fish being scaled, naked and amour plated fish would have problems with this chemical.

Recent study suggests that occupational exposure to glycol ethers is related to low motile sperm count in men, but the finding has been disputed by others.

A lot of fish keepers don't seem to realise the problems that can be caused by using meds especially unsuitable or wrong meds for the job.

This is a major problem that's never going to go away anytime soon especially in the case of beginners...They buy fish from poor sources as they don't know any better...The fish become ill so off they trot to the same store that sold the fish to them and get served by the inexperienced weekend kid who they listen to...Shops like myself are becoming harder to find nowadays as the trend of shiny new well positioned chain stores take over...Some, like your Maidenheads are very good with knowledgeable staff but others are very poor, run by people with no aquatic knowledge at all...They are all puppets that are told what to do and what to sell by the hierarchy.
