Mass fry die off

100l tank ,2 sponge filters ,3 pieces of bog wood ,almond leaves ,4 three month old fry off last batch and 2 adult rio paraguy bristle nose catfish
Within the fist 24 hours of fry leaving cave I counted 20 dead fry ,there's still a few swiming around all stats as normal
This is second batch that I've left in tank without useing fry saver and lost loads of fry
Thinking of putting internal filter back in (tuck it out because of fry getting sucked up ?)
Keep altering things for the best ,no sand or gravel ,rubbing glass clean , useing fresh veg , ground tetra pro algae ,minimal water change
Should I go back and put some black sand back in and internal filter and air stone ,or is it normal, survival of the fittest natural die off
Can't under stand how fry can hatch consume the egg sack swim out and die :wb:

Hi mate, it's not normal and may be the bare bottom tank
Can you cover the filter intake if you put it back in?
Might be a weak batch of fry that happens though

Did you test the Ammonia and Nitrite levels?
If you took a filter out you may not have had enough of a bacterial colony in the remaining ones. That could have killed them.

I have always had issues with Ancistrus losses in bare bottom tanks. I have mates who have no issues but they clean the tank bottom at least twice a day. Maybe try with a thin layer of gravel/sand. Best of luck with future spawns.

over 90% of fish deaths are accredited to ammonia... fry could have been exposed to ammonia and burnt their gills and then they die within a week as they cant eat... only needs to be a tiny spike to damage fragile fry....
and as you removed a filter - i suspect ammonia/nitrite poisoning... certain fish are more tolerant to small levels of ammonia/nitrite but b/n fry arent one of them

and yeah glass bottom for b/n fry is a no no :thumbup:
