I got a trio of L134 from someone on PF in August this year and had a spawn from them last week :woohoo: The male managed to waft a wriggler out early on so I put it in a floating hatchery then another 2 the next day. The 3 are doing well and now have stripes appearing and the male still has quite a few in the cave with him

Thanks am really chuffed

They are in a 90 litre bare bottom tank with an external filter plus sponge filter which is just kept in for emergency purposes if I ever need a spare filter. They have a cave each and there are also 2 pieces of bog wood. They share the tank with approx 20 swordtail fry. The temp is 27 degrees and PH is 7.5 and they get daily 20% water changes from my water barrel that is at room temperature with bogwood in the bottom of it.

I only started the daily water changes about a month ago when the swordtail fry were born as I do it with all my fry tanks. I wonder if thats what set them off? Whatever it was am very pleased :woohoo: I hope you have success with your colony soon

great news. I am sure you must be well thrilled!!
I was doing lots of w/c then someone told me they would do better if I stoped the w/c and did minimal change - just leave them be, so have been trying that, so they only get a water top up for evaporation loss and small weekly-ish filter wash. maybe will go back to daily w/c !!

Congrats on the spawn:clap:
I would be tempted to go back to daily water changes now Irene just might trigger tham especially with low pressure weather fronts kicking about

L134 spawning

Congrats on the spawning and good luck with your fry, i've got a group of 11 in a 130l tank, filtration is internal and external power filters with plenty of caves and bogwood but absolutely no signs of spawning, i also have it furnished with gravel on the bottom.
parameters are temp 78f,PH7.2,GH8.
Waters changes are roughly 25%weekly.
Just wondering if having a bare bottom tank makes any difference and if maybe my group is too large.
Any thoughts welcome.
Col.

Irene I agree with Bikerman that the water change now could trigger them after a lay off

Thanks Jerry, that was my first attempt at slate cave making but have never found the same slate since only black stuff :dk:

Hope you find the formula to get yours to spawn Col :D

Still all ok today, the fry in the trap are moving around a lot more and I've started to add small amounts of crushed prima which seems to excite them :woohoo:

Hi Joby - well done
A group of my L134s also spawned last week! Haven't seen any wrigglers yet though, so waiting impatiently!
Mine are also in a 90l tank. There's a group of 10 - I've had some of them for a good few years, some for only a year or so. They all have access to their own cave/ hollow log, mine have spawned in terracotta caves. (Interestingly, the cave where there is a definite spawn was used until recently by one of my longfin bristlenose males). The tank is well-planted and has almost 2" gravel. Water changes are about 25 - 30% about every fortnight, filtration is by 2 Internal filters, plus 2 air stones. It's a community tank shared by other L numbers, tetras, bristlenoses and a few cories.
It's difficult to see what there is in common with the others who've spawned them :dk:

Oh well done Albino and I hope you see some wrigglers soon

It does appear that we've all got different set ups and I guess if left long enough they will spawn

good news congrats all,
yes its a bit of a mystery how to trigger them
anyway i am trying the daily changes again for now.
i have 6 in a 90L with some corys and no lights but lots of windows in the room so getting some natural light, not a lot this time of year lol. I also have a pair in the lounge communal tank, mainly cos the male has taken over a large log and will not come out so he can only go where the log can go! so have put a female in just in case...
