ok we have all told you SAND SAND SAND, .5 to 1cm layer only. The survival of fry is not because of sand or gravel etc. Fry need 100% top quality water. So you must keep up the maintenance and water changes. I can tell you do not use gravel. When you have fry, make sure you do regular water changes etc. Do not overfeed and this aqua hobby takes time and patience. Not all eggs turn to fry and not all fry survive, so do not panik.
