just wondering what ratio of males to females i should have in a 3 foot (2wide) tank, what have you guys found to be the best? to run trio's into separate tanks? or just throw them all in there and let nature take its turn with natural selection? are 3 foot tanks ok to breed in or is it better to keep them in 2 footers? as i have about 15 3 footers on the system at the moment and no 2's.

it depends on what sorta fish you are talking about dave....

assuming you mean b/n....

a pair will breed every 10 days if everything is kept A OK !!!
if you have trios and both females want to breed your male will be flatout assuming both females arent on exactly the same egg cycle... your male will burnout and get skinny if he continually has to sit on eggs and fan...
short term this is good... long term your males health will suffer and may die... but as males are cheap as chips you may not wish to bother resting your male... just run him into the ground than replace him...
what usually happens in trios is one female will become dominant and prevent the other breeding... unless they are sisters then sometimes they will co-operate and bulk breed...

i have a 6 footer with 100+ adult b/n in and about 5 caves... its really just a grow out tank and if anything breeds its a bonus.... they breed nonstop and there isnt too much fighting going on... obviously the more dominant males have taken up cave residency and the other males just keep away...

3 footers are fine to breed in... i've bred them in a 15 litre tank just to see if i could!!! and bred them in 9000 litre ponds... so whatever tank you have they can be bred in....

3ft are fine for most smaller plecs, if you want hypancistrus or peckolitia then you can have a group of 5 or 6 with plenty of caves and tunnels, but BNs where males filght then stick to the trio of 1m and 2 f or just a pair.
