I want to get a pair of Bristlenoses in one of my new tanks to breed them. Any tips in the best set up etc. I have a cave in my main tank so when I move it across do I want the open end so I can see in it or is it better to face it away from the front? How many caves is best for a pair?

In the house of gee
Most of mine face towards the front and turned slightly into the flow. I think with bn,s any sort of cave coupled with some cool water changes you will stand a pretty good chance

Cheers

Just a pair of standard bristlenoses. Getting some small L144 to grow on in a different tank as well at some point.

Should I add a power filter to the tank as well as the air driven one? the tank is 24"x12"x12"

hi, as long as filtration is good and lots of fresh water and floor cleaning is done, as they are messy fish, a powerhead is not essential.
place caves where you can see in but dont keep peering in too often as will certainly put them off (or make them eat the eggs.). choice of cave may help, some dont care but some are fussier. sometimes helps to cover the cave entrance with an over hang so its sheltered from light . like bit of wood on top with edge hanging over.

they spawned in an artifical hollow log and are now in their own tank with the offspring. Male is on eggs again.

Bought another pair on sunday for the community tank much chunkier so fingers crossed

ABSOLUTELY GUTTED. I moved my male and his latest 2 batches of fry in to another tank on friday night in my fish cupboard in the porch. When I went into the porch on Saturday I knew something was wrong as there was a fishy smell. When I opened the door the water in the tank was cloudy and all the fry and Dad were dead. The heater had failed and fried them all. :http://i37.tin The tank next to it was up at 30 degrees as well so once I emtied the "dead tank" I added a few ice cubes to cool the one at 30. On the look out for a new male now if anyone around Sheffield has one to spare please

on Saturday I got 2 male albino bristlenoses. One has been put with 2 of my females (1 smallish common and 1 large albino) the other in another tank with no females. My plan is to swap them about to avoid fatigue. Then last night (monday) the males in with the females invited the common in to his luv shack.
Tuesday night and hes sat on eggs.

stanny,

my BN aren't really that bothered which way their cave / shell (in my case) is facing...
they seem to breed no matter what.....

I have tried caves, small plant pots, ornaments, and now spine shells.. and I can say that mine seem to prefer the spine shells as they have a over hang and the fish see to find it easier to keep others out and be able to protect their young easier... :)

cant be doing much wrong as now on 3 spwan with this pair and have about 120 small pleco's in the tank right now.... just need to find a local LFS in Rotherham or near to Sheffield / Barnsley to take some off me...

I def dont use a power head... just as gee man says- regular water changes evry day, sometimes I can not fit every day in but will get up early the next day and do a water change in that tank real early...:)

I also have sand substrate which I think is more natural for the fish and pleco's I could be wrong but it is a learning curve some what always..... I do try to keep a couple of corys in the tank to stimulate the sand as they like to rough and move the sand about... though for some reason cories don't like this are of yorkshire coz I have lost some recently....

was thinking of contacting the water board to ask them what is in the water right now...
or when I return to work having a HMA fitted sooon....

my males hardly ever fight, they sometimes flare at each other over algae wafers but both my males take it in turn to fan the fry in the luv shack shell...lol

good luck LJ
