For all you that breed plecos, I am just curious as to what is the ratio of males to females when you have young??

not only unpredictable, but most breeders will also sell fry on before they are a sexable size, so they would have no way of knowing the ratio:dk:

Nature will always make more females than males it’s a rule of survival.

More males make’s for an unbalanced society with total biological suicide as the only outcome.
Put quite bluntly
Males can fertilize a large amount of females.
Females are produced by nature to breed simple not very PC but nature is no respecter of PC.
An organism has 3 prime rules to have sex to kill to die, No species on this planet is built to obey any other law, and these 3 laws are the only laws.
Disobey at your species’ peril.

your 3 albino longfins can stay with the male comon but
if one or 2 of the lf abns are male they will fight

1 male 1 female
best IMO is 1m 2females!

it can varies base on the male i think. some male fish produce higher percentage of male fries than female fries. an example is my bettas. i bred them. some batches from different dad produces different percentage. one produce 80% female fries. the other 75% male fries. lol wow dont you wish we are crocs? lol male and female percentage varies on temp haha

for plecos. iono but i do usually see more female plecos at the stores vs. male tho

I found this in some peps i bred for a while, the male and female i had produced around 80% female as i raised a few clutches to select and breed from.

b/n

after breeding b/n for some time now i have found if the water is soft/acidic you get many more females than males....

alternatively high ph and hard water gives many more males....

using tap water (average ph of 7.4) gives 2 times as many males (approx) than females... and using rain water (average ph of 6.5) it was exactly the opposite at least 2 times the girls to the males... maybe even more....

the theory of nature producing more females than males IMO isnt exactly true..... sometimes more males are produced in an effort to survive...
as the strongest male will often kill or fight off other males so the strongest male will breed ensuring the best possible offspring...

i havent grown out enough plecos to confirm this.... but in a couple years i should be able to give an educated opinion on 333's and 066's

Thank you all for the replies. This is all very interesting, I will just have to wait and see as they age what I end up with. If I do have a male LF which I hope I do then I will remove the normal BN promptly. So far everyone is getting along good.

Yes I would love to have 1 male and 2 females but I guess time will tell.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

I Belive that as this fish is a mutant ie forced form for human joy it is not natural thus the Law cant apply to it .
It is the eception that proves the rule

Again I see a point but as you say low PH = more males
Natural water = low ph = more males
Thus nature is at work

Some species do produce a surfeit of males i.e. ants but this is a social and biological society that is very different to mammals were groups are smaller less group dependant and function against each other in a competing ideological world.
We can’t expect nature to work in distorted conditions
Look at humans’ total biological suicidal mutants everywhere, emotive bullying in every group, a totally unbalanced society.

so then after you breed them in soft water you can raise the water to hard to make them turn out to be male?
dont think it works like that i think sex ratio is determined at the time of spawning not after....

just grew a batch of common b/n out that were spawned in 7.6 ph... and as yet i havent found a single female.... they are 7-9cm size and once bristles appear i catch them and they head off to the local fishop...
females do grow a bit slower so im expecting to have some girls left in the end
approx 150 fry in this spawn and i have sold nearly 2/3 of them already...

i used a fair bit of rainwater to get my albino longfins spawning last year and the first batch nearly all produced females.... 50 odd from first spawn and i grew these up to choose some out of to make a couple more colonys...
ended up with five males only.... i didnt take note of the ph at the time but im guessing it would have been well below 7... closer to 6 ph... as there was some grapevine wood in the tank which lowers ph quite considerably too...
