i've just recently had a spawn of 20 from my 174s
I did wonder if he used 2 females though :dk:

brilliant - how did you get eggs out of cave?
I only tried to get the eggs out once, and he wedged them all in and they died

held the cave underwater upside down over my egg tumbler to catch them wriggle out, gently rotating the cave at about a 45 degree angle causing the male to try and level himself out inside the cave, the fry just fall out within 10-15 seconds then transferred them to the fry trap. I use the same technique when removing eggs from a cave, after a few of the first spawn fungussed, I decided to leave these with dad for him to hatch them out and then move them to a trap. I'm guessing all of the spawn made it as I didn't find any egg cases or kicked out eggs in the tank, so he is a good dad!
There are so many and there wriggling all over the place like mad, i think there may actually be 19 not 20, but is almost impossible to count as they wont keep still...
There's the first female that spawned now very gravid and hanging near his cave, and also a younger very plump female in the tank aswell.. I think hes going to be quite busy over the next few weeks :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
The young have already started to colour up quite nicely, will get some more pics tomorrow, when i do some water changes, and clean the tanks..

How big was your female mate? not just big as fat, but TL? as this female that had the 19/20 fry is easily the biggest female in any of my groups, id guess a good 3.5 inch possibly a little larger, and was looking gravid, but not as fat as some I have seen, and she's already starting to get fat again!
Thanks, this was definitely only one spawn from the largest female, I watched them caving and spawning until lights went out, and a few hours later she was out the cave with marks down her side and looking quite thinner, and the male sat on a large bundle of eggs, all the other females were unmarked and still as fat as they were before...Wow thats a fantastic number well done :clap:

I guess the spawn sizes and growth rates of L174 and L046 are much the same?
L174 are very slow growers, taken my first lot 5 months to reach 1" total length, unfortunately can't compare to zebs as mine not spawned yet :cry:

i have heard of 32 fry in a spawn... but same issue dont know if more than 1 female laid...... :woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:
22 is most I have had, from one pair. Although have had 28 in cave at once from 2 females about 5 days apart. Seperated them into fry savers afterwards.

8 caves, 2 tubes, few peices of slate to cover.
8 fish in total. 4 FM 3M & 1 small unknown (and 23/24 fry)
and have another tank 24" x 12" x 15" with 2 FM 2M currently awaiting a new home in the front room in a juwel 125...

love the camera work..... well done.... most wrigglers take forever to get some colour then it seems like a day or two and they have lost their egg sac and they are ready to feed.... like a J-curve....
