Trying L25

Sometime Jul/Aug last year, I came off couple of years of zebra breeding and wanted to try some other species. I already have other hypans, so decided to return to my first loves...<3

For royals, I collected a pair of LDA65 and BEC adults (peru greens and L190 were false starts). For pseudas, news of Xingu dam project etc plus previous interest narrowed my choice to L25s. I actually wanted L24 Tucuri, but none was available. Started to buy up any 25s I can find 12" and above. All were from hobbyists and I ended with a dozen; 9 males : 3 females, TL ranging from 12" to 3 giants males which are 16"++.

It has been 4 to 5 months since I had them in their new concrete pond with sandy bottom, size about 15'l x6'w x3'h...I should measure again to confirm. There are 15 caves of varying sizes, lots of wood, plants like lotus, natural algae on the wall, etc. Since I started this project, fellow hobbyists have breed L600s and L273s successfully in glass tanks.

Its not possible for me to know when there are spawns in the pond if any, until maybe when the fry are free swimming and swim up to the side of the pond. If the breeding project is not successful, my secondary objective is to groom my L25 to 24"

I kept them in a my friend's pond initially, and after more than one month, took all of them out to transfer to another pond, to check on their well being and to comfirm sex ratio.

This series of pictures was taken on the day of transfer by a friend, Hellsonic from AF. There were many good friends, helping out that day:D

One of the fiesty males, the big net behind was what I used for the capture.

I broke its lyre during the capture, heart pain.

A giant recovering from trimmed tail by previous owner. This guy is one big red pineapple.

Another big one, natural outdoor condition brings out the red...

Needed a few cartons to do the transfer

Its a Boy!

Another big one, actually I forgotten if the biggest was 16", 17" or 18"...

This one was last out cos it wedged itself tightly into a concrete crevice, I had to use a cloth to drag it out after a long time, not sure it was more tired than me, but glad I got it out unharmed:

After doing a final headcount, that's yours truly happily, tiredly and dirtily, emerging from my minature Amazon

This is just a personal pic log on my mini adventure, I won't be able to provide scientific data, etc.
I measured, water temperature 1 ft below ranges from 26 to 28 degrees celcius, ambience temperature same as Amazon ( "we" are both near the equator ), pH is a constant 7.

Hope you enjoyed this. And BIG thanks to the mods here for being so supportive.

Cheers

Super pic's Lawrence:clap: puts my single 15 inch L25 to shame! What's the aggression/injuries been like? I only ask as my big L25 and 12 inch L24 are really well behaved. Wondered what a larger group is like.:hi:

A mini amazon in your back garden, it should be a L25 orgy! Great shots and the fish are stunners, the fish look just like wild caughts (colouration wise) as you stated, the outdoors is doing them good.

Why did the previous owner trim the tail?

Thanks guys. credits to hellsonic, the man behind the camera.

I have tons of wood which I tried to arrange into about 5 diiferent piles, territories. I figured there are 3 giant males, hence they must have their own territory without line of sight from the other. I placed caves around and under these piles. On hindsight, should have taken pics of dry pond while preparing. In the original pond, my friend's 8" L600 which was a stowaway, was killed. After the transfer, a young 10" L25 male was killed within the first week. Eversince, there have not been casualties, and from what I can see, the tails are growing nicely and big, so I would guess that they have settled down and very minimal aggression if any....

Why did the previous owner trim the tail?
I believe the caudal spines were not straight so was trimmed. Thereafter, fungus hit this guy and the next owner medicated and nursed it back to health...I took over from there:yes:

Thanks for all the kind comments.

Champ, Ed and a few others were doing the sexing for me while I was "harvesting". I dont think we got a girl pics.

The link that FF MKII posted in the 1st page is a good read and reference. It inspired me to start on this actually.

Any girls pics to compare with boys.
Hi Champ,

Beside the papilla (anus) differences, which is most accurate, the outward features include bigger fins for males. One observation is that when you turn over the male, the two anal fins are spread out, when you turn a female over, she cups and keeps the fins together ( see pic). Not sure if true for all females.

This is a new almost 1 footer lady to join the fold, here you go as requested:
The boy is pointed and protruding, female seems to be blunt and hollow.

Compared to male I posted earlier,
