Hi Jack i use wood blocks cut up in to 1.5"x1.5" x what ever lengh you desire and i cut a 24mm hole for the cave aspect, you can use Oak, Fruit Tree woods, buy some bogwood and just drill a hole in that, i got hold of a old oak front door cut it all up in to the blocks then drilled the holes and sanded it down it workd a treat and didnt cost me anything and the plecos love it

if use oak, or beech, from cutting a branch off a tree you need to let the sap all dry out first so leave it on patio or somewhere for several months first

I have used several hard woods Oak ECT
The problem with old hard woods is that they are just that ruddy hard
Just grabbing a the DeWalt and trying to hold the wood is not going to work
If you know some one with a lath or a small work shop they may be able to drill them out for you
Hard woods will rip the poo out of drill bits
I used some Honduras mahogany once
It had to be over 100 years old and it burnt out 3 drills but it sunk like a stone.
