ZHF's Carnivore Crave
Carnivorous cichlids need to be kept on a specialized diet that is high in protein, but also includes vegetables as well. Carnivores in the wild will consume a certain amount of vegetable matter to acquire various nutrients that their diet may be lacking in. The reality is that carnivores do not just eat meat anymore than herbivores eat just algae and vegetables. Because of this, we make sure to include a balanced amount of both easily digestible marine proteins and vegetable matter in our Carnivore Crave pellets.
If you read the label closely, in some cases you may find that the food that was designed for carnivores, may in fact be based on land animal proteins like beef and poultry. Fish are cold-blooded animals, meaning that their body temperature rises and falls with their surrounding environment. They use fat for both an energy reserve as well as an energy resource. Just like humans, they have fat stored throughout their bodies. But these fats need to have a low melting point so that they can be utilized if the water around them is cold (like during the winter). Warm-blooded animals, on the other hand store fats that have a high melting point. If you feed your cichlids fats from warm-blooded animals, they will not be able to utilize a large amount of these fats for energy use. Consequently, it will be stored in their livers, and over time it will accumulate leading to Cirrhosis aka Fatty Liver Disease. Not ZHF's Carnivore Crave. Our food only includes marine proteins to ensure the health and longevity of your cichlids.

Lets Break it Down:

Herring Meal - Herring is an excellent oceanic fish to supplement cichlids diets. They have the highest protein content of any fish and they are an excellent source of vitamin B12, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. One of the most important benifits of this fish is its high fat content, which promotes healthy growth in young fish. Fat from cold water fish such as herring fish is much healthier for your cichlids than fat from warm-blooded animals, because warm-blooded animals store fats that have a higher melting point than fats stored by coldwater fish, which are harder for cichlids to process. Unused fats from warm-blooded animlas are be stored in cichlids livers and over time can accumulate, leading to cirrhosis(aka fatty liver disease).

Squid Meal - Another great source of protein, vitamins and minerals for cichlids.

Kelp Meal - Kelp is a sea weed(also categorized as a marine algae) that is rich in nutrients as well as a great source of iron, calcium and fiber(which aids in healthy digestion).

Spirulina - Spirulina contains high levels of easily absorbed anti-oxidants like chlorophyll, beta-carotene, and phycocyanin. It also has high levels of iron, vitamin B-12 and chromium, which is useful for metabolizing sugars.

Garlic - Garlic is an amazing additive for any fish feed! Not only does it boost your cichlid's immune system and help detoxify their system of parasites, it is also highly palatable and can encourage just about any fish to eat, no matter how picky!

Chlorella - This algae is praised for its ability to remove or neutralize heavy metals and other chemical toxins from the blood.
DL Methione - This is one of 8 essential amino acids that cichlids cannot synthesize from other nutrients. Thus it is very important to include in a carnivores diet.

Yeast - Yeast supports your cichlids digestive system while providing them with healthy vitamins and minerals.

Lecithin - An important nutrient that increases liver function and aids against Fatty Liver Disease.

Natural Color Enhancers - Paprika, Marigold, Astaxanthin, Beta Carotene and Canthaxanthin.
