Update: L134 Female Lays eggs on 1 week old fry!

Well last week I had a female trapping a male in what turned out to be nothing... BUT

There was a big storm yesterday so I took the chance to do a 30% water change and a 1° INCREASE IN TEMP FROM 26-27°C. The fish had been pretty active and the females look particularly plump so I thought one of the other pairs might do their thing... timing was good.

Somehow a female has made her way past the male guarding his fry and looks like she wants to lay her eggs. These fry hatched exactly 7 days ago.
Update (17/09/2010): This morning I had a peek with the torch & discovered the male sitting on a new bunch of eggs with the fry from the previous spawn happily sitting nearby. The male looks like he's holding the eggs about 20mm from the end of the cave, and the babies from spawn 1 are all at the end.

The male looks quite off-colour so I hope he's got enough energy to take care of this second lot as he's already gone without food for a few weeks. I might consider uplifting the fry when they've all hatched.

The male is also doing his usual quivering at the entrance of the cave.

Water must be good

Anyone seen this before?

In the wild as in tanks males will have several stages of fry in a cave
To the male it is just all part of the job

well done, he is a good dad. might be wise to keep any other plump females away from him for a few weeks so he can then rest

He's certainly a good stud!!!And a good dad. I have another 3 fat females waiting for his attention.

I don't know how I can keep them away short of physically moving them.. I'm quite worried this male will exhaust himself then expire. I had to add another male to the tank yesterday in the ope of distracting the girls a bit and causing a bit of a reshuffle of home caves.

i hope its a big tank! if you have added another male you may find the alpha will fight him, if the other male is a good size and investigates the cave he could even cause dad to abandon the eggs to come and fight.
i would put the other male and one or two fat females in another tank. if cant do that make sure lots of caves and weed etc so cant see each other so easily

Thanks Irene,

I've purchased some more caves so there will be a cave per fish +1 to keep the arguments to a minimum.

Currently he's still rolling the egg ball around and only one fry from the first spawn has come out hunting for food. I expect to see the others over the next few days if dad lets them out.

Hope he gets a few days for a food break after this.

Wow Congrats on a great Daddy, he is a keeper, I would not have two males in there either,...It could really cause you big problems...
Best of luck...

Hungry dad.

It turns out that this "good dad" was either a bad dad or just really hungry.

After the second batch of fry had hatched, they gradually disappeared day after day. I'd be hungry after 4 weeks in a cave too. Today marks just on one month since the first batch of eggs arrived and the final fry has been eaten. I have about 12 survivors from the first batch.

I think I'll have to use an egg tumbler from now on. Anyone else used one successfully on L134 eggs? How do you separate the male from his guard over the eggs?

regards

Matt
